The Pulpit Commentary - Matthew 26:26-29

The Lord's Supper. We must never forget that this central ordinance of our Christian worship was instituted by our Lord himself. It is an indication of his foresight and forbearance; for it shows first that he saw we should need to be repeatedly reminded of what he is to us, and then that he condescended to help the infirmity of our wandering natures by providing the most impressive means for continually presenting the great central facts of his work before our minds and hearts. He enlists... read more

I will not drink henceforth ( ἀπ ' ἀ ì ρτι ) of this fruit ( γεννη ì ματος ) of the vine. He is about to die. From this moment forward he tastes not the cup. It does not follow that he had partaken of the consecrated wine which he gave his apostles. Probability is against his having done so (see on Matthew 26:26 ). He used the same words with the first cup at the commencement of the supper ( Luke 22:18 ). Of this he probably partook, but not of the latter. The... read more

Which they could not lawfully have done had they been celebrating the usual Jewish Passover (see Exodus 12:22 ). Though it is possible that many modifications of the original ritual had been gradually introduced, yet Christ so strictly observed the Law that he would... read more

Matthew 26:29. But I well not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, &c. He had made the same declaration concerning the passover-cup, Luke 22:18; and therefore, it is probable, his meaning upon the whole was, that he would neither partake of the passover nor of the sacrament, till he had the satisfaction to see the things signified by these institutions fulfilled in the gospel dispensation, which therefore was nigh at hand. Or we may interpret the words in a more general sense,... read more

142. The Lord’s Supper instituted (Matthew 26:26-30; Mark 14:22-26; Luke 22:14-20)By the time of Jesus, the Jewish Passover had developed into a set form with a number of added procedures. Among the additions was a cup of wine, for which the head of the household offered a prayer of thanks (or blessing; cf. 1 Corinthians 10:16). He filled this cup and passed it among the participants, both before and after the eating of unleavened bread. The participants also sang a collection of psalms known... read more
