Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Mark 10:17-31

See this passage illustrated in the notes at Matthew 19:16-30.Mark 10:17Gone forth - From the place where he had been teaching.Into the way - Into the road or path on his journey.Running - Thus showing the intensity with which he desired to know the way of life. Zeal to know the way to be saved is proper, nor is it possible that it should be too intense if well directed. Nothing else is so important, and nothing demands, therefore, so much effort and haste.Mark 10:19Defraud not - Do not take... read more

Mark 10:17-22. There came one running, &c. See notes an Matthew 19:16-22. And he answered, Master, &c. He stands reproved now, and drops the epithet, Good. Jesus, beholding him And looking into his heart; loved him Doubtless for the dawnings of good which he saw in him; and said to him Out of tender love, One thing thou lackest The love of God, without which all religion is a dead carcass. In order to this, throw away what is the grand hinderance of it. Give up thy great... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Mark 10:17-31

110. The rich young man (Matthew 19:16-30; Mark 10:17-31; Luke 18:18-30)A wealthy young man came to Jesus and asked what special deeds he should do to gain eternal life. Jesus responded that there was no need to ask him, because God had already told him in the Ten Commandments what he should do (Matthew 19:16-19). The man boasted that he had kept most of the commandments, but Jesus saw that at least he had failed in the last, which said ‘Do not covet’. While people around him were suffering... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Mark 10:19

Thou knowest the commandments, Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor thy father and mother. In these words, wherein Jesus quoted from the second table of the Decalogue, our Lord answered the young man's question with regard to what he might do that he might inherit eternal life. Matthew supplied the connecting link, "If thou wouldest enter into life, keep the commandments" (Matthew 19:17). When the young man inquired as to "which," Jesus quoted the... read more

Mark 10:17-19. There came one running,— St. Luk 18:18 calls this person αρχων τις, a certain ruler, by which may be meant either a ruler of the synagogue, or a member of the sanhedrim. This person expected to have found Jesus in the city of Ephraim; but when he understood he had justleft that place to go to Jerusalem, he ran after him, and, coming up to him, he kneeled to him, in token of respect, and addressed him upon an important question, with the title of good master, or, as the words... read more

3. Lessons concerning self-sacrifice 10:1-31Jesus gave this series of lessons south of Galilee in Perea and Judea, not in Galilee. Another contrast is the audience. He gave the preceding instruction to the disciples in a house, but He gave this teaching to the multitudes and the disciples in the open air. read more

Jesus’ instruction about wealth 10:17-31A question from a man in the crowd initiated this incident. Then Jesus proceeded to instruct His disciples following up the encounter. The position of this section in Mark’s Gospel is significant. It occurs after Jesus’ teaching about the importance of receiving the kingdom with trust and humility (Mark 10:13-16), and it precedes Jesus’ third prediction of His passion (Mark 10:32-34). The young man thought he could obtain the kingdom with works and... read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Mark 10:19

The Old Testament taught that if a person kept the Mosaic Law he would live (Deuteronomy 30:15-16). This was theoretically possible but practically impossible. Jesus reminded the man of what the law required by citing five commands in the second table of the Decalogue. The commands Jesus mentioned are easily verifiable in conduct. Mark alone recorded the prohibition against defrauding, which was evidently a particular expression of stealing appropriate to the wealthy. [Note: Plummer, p. 239.] read more
