The Pulpit Commentary - Psalms 78:61

And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand . God's "strength" and "glory" is the ark of the covenant (compare the expression in 1 Samuel 4:21 , 1 Samuel 4:22 , "The glory is departed from Israel"). (For the capture and "captivity" of the ark, see 1 Samuel 4:17 , and 1 Samuel 4:5 ; 1 Samuel 6:1-21 .) read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Psalms 78:60

So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh - The tabernacle or tent which had been erected at Shiloh. He forsook that as a place where he was to be worshipped; that is, he caused his tabernacle, or his place of worship, to be erected in another place, to wit, on Mount Zion. See Psalms 78:68. The name Shiloh means properly a place of rest, and seems to have been given to this place as such a place, or as a place where the ark might abide after its migrations. Shiloh was a city within the limits... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Psalms 78:61

And delivered his strength into captivity - That is, the ark, considered as the symbol of his power. This constituted the defense of the people; this was the emblem of the presence of God, which, when with them, was their real protection. The allusion here is to the time when the ark was taken by the Philistines in the days of Eli. See 1 Samuel 4:3-11.And his glory - That which was emblematic of his glory, to wit, the ark.Into the enemy’s hand - The hand or power of the Philistines. read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Psalms 78:1-68

Psalms 78:0 Lessons from historyBeing a true teacher, the psalmist is concerned for the spiritual condition of his people. His present intention is to comment on events in the history of Israel so that people of future generations may take heed (1-4). God gave his law to his people to guide them. The record of his faithfulness will be an encouragement, the record of Israel’s failures a warning (5-8).The first reminder is of the stubbornness of the tribe of Ephraim in one of Israel’s early... read more

CONTINUED WICKEDNESS OF ISRAEL IN CANAAN"Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God, And kept not his testimonies; But turned back, and dealt treacherously like their fathers: They were turned aside like a deceitful bow. For they provoked him to anger with their high places; And moved him to jealousy with their graven images. When God heard this, he was wroth, And greatly abhorred Israel; So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent which he placed among men; And delivered... read more

Psalms 78:60. So that he forsook the tabernacle— This relates to that part of the history of the Jews which is given 1 Samuel 4:0.; for, upon their sending for the ark of God from the tabernacle, in which it was deposited at Shiloh, God smote them, and suffered the Philistines to take the ark.
