Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers - 1 Chronicles 2:31

(31) The children of Sheshan; Ahlai.—See Note on 1 Chronicles 1:41, “Dishon.” Ahlai is the name of a clan, not of an individual. Others would explain such phrases by assuming that “sons of so-and-so” is a conventional expression, used even where only one person has to be registered; or that the chronicler has in such cases abbreviated the contents of his source, by omitting all the names but one. Both assumptions are antiquated. read more

James Gray's Concise Bible Commentary - 1 Chronicles 2:1-55

GENEALOGIES AND PEDIGREES INTRODUCTION With this begins the study of those historical books of the Old Testament written shortly after the return from the Babylonian captivity, the remainder of the series including 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther. “Chronicles” means “diaries” or “journal,” and the books recapitulate sacred history from the time of Adam, in which the earlier books of the Old Testament are drawn upon and occasionally supplemented. The Holy Spirit, who is the real... read more

The Sons of Israel: Their Genealogy Typical Sinners 1 Chronicles 2:0 All this elaborate tracing of family lines shows that the historian is about to conduct his enquiries upon a complete and exact basis. We acquire confidence in the man by the minuteness of the very details, which at first taxes both our patience and our memory. The names may be so read as to constitute only an elaborate catalogue, in which case the spirit of unity would be lost, and the whole process would end in nothingness... read more

Hawker's Poor Man's Commentary - 1 Chronicles 2:15-55

If the Reader be desirous to attend to the history of some of the persons here registered, he will find an account of them elsewhere in the Bible. But many of them are only mentioned in this record, and that only with a view to preserve the genealogy of their family. Bezaleel is honourably spoken of, Exodus 31:2 . Hezron was one of the threescore and ten souls of Jacob's household that went down into Egypt. Genesis 46:10 . Jair we have an account of; Numbers 32:41 . But, it should seem, that... read more

And Caleb, the son of Hezron, v. 9, begat children of Azubah, his wife, and of Jerioth, who seems to have been a secondary wife, whose children were reckoned as those of Azubah; her sons are these: Jesher, and Shobab, and Ardon. v. 19. And when Azubah, his rightful spouse, was dead, Caleb took unto him Ephrath, which bare him Hur. v. 20. And Hur begat Uri, and Uri begat Bezaleel. v. 21.
