Solomon’s foreign wives 11:1-8The writer’s condemnation of Solomon in 1 Kings 11:1-2 rests on Deuteronomy 23:3-9 as well as Deuteronomy 7:3-4. The phraseology goes back to Deuteronomy 23:3-9 and the motive to Deuteronomy 7:3-4 (cf. Exodus 23:31-33; Exodus 34:15-16; Ezra 9:1; Nehemiah 13:26). Solomon’s foreign wives were of two categories: Canaanites prohibited in Deuteronomy 7, and women from other nations prohibited in Deuteronomy 23. Chemosh. Compare Numbers 21:29 . Jeremiah 48:7 , Jeremiah 48:13 , Jeremiah 48:46 ; 2 Kings 23:13 . the hill, &c. = Mount of Olives! Hence called "the Mount of Corruption" (2 Kings 23:13 ). Molech. Generally has the article and denotes the king-idol (Leviticus 18:21 ; Leviticus 20:2 , Leviticus 20:3 , Leviticus 20:4 , Leviticus 20:5 ; Leviticus 11:7 . 2 Kings 23:10 . Jeremiah 32:35 ). Isaiah 30:33 with Isaiah 57:9 may be Molech, the idol, and not Melek, "king". read more
