The history of Judah is resumed 2 Kings 14:1-22, followed by a brief account of the contemporary history of Israel under Jeroboam II 2 Kings 14:23-29. The earlier narrative runs parallel with 2 Chronicles 25:0. read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - 2 Kings 14:2

Joash of Judah reigned forty years 2 Kings 12:1, and Joash of Israel ascended the throne in his namesake’s thirty-seventh year 2 Kings 13:10; hence, we should have expected to hear that Amaziah succeeded his father in the fourth rather than in the second year of Joash (of Israel). The usual explanation of the discrepancy is to suppose a double accession of the Israelite Joash - as co-partner with his father in the thirty-seventh year of his namesake, as sole king two years afterward. read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - 2 Kings 14:1-2

2 Kings 14:1-2. In the second year of Joash, king of Israel After he began to reign alone: for he reigned two or three years with his father, of which see the note on 2 Kings 13:10. This, as Dr. Lightfoot observes, was the thirty-eighth year of his father Joash, king of Judah, three years before his death. For Joash had thrown himself into such a miserable condition by his apostacy, and the murder of Zechariah, (2 Kings 12:17; 2 Chronicles 24:25,) that he was become unfit to govern the... read more

13:1-17:41 HISTORY TO THE FALL OF ISRAELAfter the anti-Baal revolution (13:1-14:22)Jehu’s son Jehoahaz followed the sins of earlier Israelite kings, and so did his people. The Syrian attacks foreseen by Elisha were so severe that, had God not mercifully intervened, the whole population would have been left homeless and the entire army destroyed (13:1-9).The next king, Jehoash, learnt from Elisha that he would win three battles against Syria. He would have won more, had he not lacked faith in... read more

second year of Joash. According to 2 Kings 13:10 , Joash (king of Israel) began to reign in the thirty-seventh year of Joash (king of Judah). If Arnaziah began in the second year of Joash (king of Israel), he would have reigned only thirty-nine years. But he reigned forty (2 Kings 12:1 ). All depends on mode of reckoning from Nisan, and counting parts of years for complete years. This would at once explain the difference. See App-50 . Our difficulty, as usual, arises from our ignorance. read more

Amaziah’s policies 14:1-6Amaziah’s only act of goodness that the writer of Kings included was his obedience to the Mosaic Law in the matter of not executing children for their fathers’ crimes (Deuteronomy 24:16). Kings of other ancient Near Eastern countries commonly practiced such executions. Amaziah instead trusted God to control the potential rebels. read more

6. Amaziah’s good reign in Judah 14:1-22Amaziah of Judah reigned over Judah for 29 years (796-767 B.C.). He began reigning when Jehoash was king over Israel and died during the reign of Jehoash’s son and successor Jeroboam II. The prophet Joel may have ministered in Judah during his reign. Reigns of Amaziah of Judah and Jeroboam of Israel1. In the second year of Joash.. king of Israel] Joash of Judah reigned 40 years, and as his thirty-seventh year corresponded to the first year of Joash of Israel (2 Kings 13:10) the accession of his son Amaziah could not coincide with the Israelite king’s second year; so that there is some slight error of calculation.3. Not like David] He was not perfectly faithful to the Lord, for late in his reign he worshipped the gods of Edom (2 Chronicles... read more
