2 Kings 15:12. Thy sons shall sit on the throne of Israel unto the fourth generation— God had promised Jehu, that for executing his will upon the house of Ahab, he would continue the crown of Israel in his family for four generations; and accordingly Jehoahaz, Joash, Jehoram, and Zechariah succeed him; but because he did it not so much in obedience to the divine commands, as to satisfy his private ambition, and in a method of cruelty quite abhorrent to the divine nature, God cut his family... read more
9. Zechariah’s evil reign in Israel 15:8-12Zechariah reigned only six months (753-752 B.C.) before his successor Shallum assassinated him. Zechariah was the fourth and last king of Jehu’s dynasty (2 Kings 15:12; cf. 2 Kings 10:30). The fact that the people made Shallum king after he killed Zechariah suggests that Zechariah was not popular."Zechariah’s reign also is noteworthy in that it begins an era of intrigue. Shallum becomes the first person of this current era to come to power through... read more

AZARIAH'S REIGN IN JUDAH (vv.1-17) The reign of Azariah began after Jereboam had reigned 27 years in Samaria. We have seen Azariah (Uzziah) was only 16 years old when he began to reign, and reigned 52 years in Jerusalem (v.2). His mother (Jecholiah) must have been a believer, for Uzziah's reign generally was honouring to the Lord (v.3). It is noted, however, that he did not remove the high places of worship, where the people burned incense (v.4). Nothing more is said here of Azariah's... read more

Chaos in Israel (15:8-26)The long and prosperous reign of Jeroboam II brought political as well as social and religious troubles. When Jeroboam died, Israel entered a time of political chaos, as ambitious men fought to seize power. The nation lost its stability, and Assyria soon began to show interest in adding Israel to its rapidly expanding empire.Jehu’s dynasty, which began bloodily, ended bloodily when its fifth king was murdered after a reign of only six months (8-12; cf. 10:30; Hosea 1:4;... read more
