The Pulpit Commentary - 2 Thessalonians 1:9

Who ; namely, the unbelieving Gentiles and Jews. Shall be punished; literally, shall pay the penalty; shall suffer punishment (R.V.). With everlasting destruction; or rather, even everlasting destruction; the words being in apposition. "Destruction'' here denotes ruin, death; the word is only used in Paul's Epistles ( 1 Corinthians 5:8 ; 1 Thessalonians 5:3 ; 1 Timothy 6:9 ). The Greek word translated "everlasting," from dogmatic reasons, has given rise to much controversy.... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - 2 Thessalonians 1:10

When ; defining the period when this judgment of the wicked will occur. He ; namely, the Lord Jesus. Shall come to be glorified; the purpose of his coming. In ; not "through," or "among," but "in," as the sphere or element of his glory. His saints; not the holy angels who will accompany him to judgment, but holy men whom he has redeemed with his blood. Christ will be glorified in his saints, inasmuch as their glory was the result of his sufferings and death, and their holiness is the... read more

Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction; - see the notes on Matthew 25:41, Matthew 25:46. The word which is here rendered “destruction” (ὄλεθρον olethron), is different from that which occurs in Matthew 25:46, and which is there rendered “punishment” - κόλασις kolasis. The word ὄλεθρον olethron - “olethron” - occurs only here and in 1Co 5:5; 1 Thessalonians 5:3; 1 Timothy 6:9; in each of which places it is rendered destruction. It does not denote annihilation, but is used in the... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - 2 Thessalonians 1:10

When he shall come to be glorified in his saints - That is, the redeemed in that day will be the means of promoting his glory, or the universe will see his glory manifested in their redemption. His chief glory as seen in that day will be connected with the fact that he has redeemed his people; and he will come in order that all the appropriate honor of such a work may then be manifested. He will be “glorified” then by the numbers that shall have been redeemed; by their patience in the trials... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - 2 Thessalonians 1:9-10

2 Thessalonians 1:9-10. Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction Not the annihilation, but the perversion and utter ruin of all their powers of body and mind, so that those powers become instruments of torment and sources of misery to them in all possible ways. As there can be no end of their sins, (the same enmity against God continuing,) so neither of their punishment: sin and its punishment running parallel through eternity itself. They must of necessity therefore be cut off... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - 2 Thessalonians 1:1-12

1:1-2:12 CONCERNING CHRIST’S RETURNA source of encouragement (1:1-12)The Thessalonian Christians continue to grow in faith, love and endurance, in spite of the constant persecution they suffer; and Paul continues to talk about them as an example that should challenge others (1:1-4; cf. 1 Thessalonians 1:3,1 Thessalonians 1:6-7). He encourages them to keep moving forward, and points out that their suffering is proof of the genuineness of their faith. Their endurance shows that they are worthy to... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - 2 Thessalonians 1:9

who shall suffer punishment, even eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might,The reference of this verse is to "hell," the final destiny of the wicked; and, for somewhat extended remarks on this subject, see my Commentary on Matthew, pp. 411-413. It is only with thoughts of the greatest melancholy and sorrow that a subject such as this may be considered. Does there have to be such a place? Deep questionings of the soul are not fully answered in the sacred... read more

when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at in all them that believed (because our testimony unto you was believed) in that day. When he shall come ... The Greek word here, according to Kelcy, "is the aorist subjunctive, a construction indicating the certainty of the event and yet the uncertainty of the time of it," [29] the same being another bit of evidence that neither Christ nor any of his apostles expected the coming as a certainty in their day. Kelcy is also... read more
