The Pulpit Commentary - Galatians 3:6-9

Second argument—the case of Abraham. The natural answer to the previous question is "through the hearing of faith," and this as naturally suggests the case of "faithful Abraham." The Jews boasted of their relationship to Abraham, and therefore an example taken from his history would have special force. I. THE JUSTIFICATION OF ABRAHAM WAS NOT THROUGH CIRCUMCISION , BUT BY FAITH . "Even as Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness." No... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Galatians 3:6-9

The faith and blessing of Abraham. Not only, says the apostle, did you begin the Christian life in faith, but even Abraham, whom the Jews reverence as their great exemplar, and whose heir they profess to be, even he was justified by faith; and therefore they who enjoy his blessing are the possessors of the same faith. I. ABRAHAM WAS A MAN OF FAITH . He knew nothing of the Levitical Law. He walked by faith. His faith was not assent to a creed. Nor was it an intelligent... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Galatians 3:7

Know ye therefore ( γινώσκετε ἄρα ); or, ye perceive then. Critics are divided between the two renderings, the imperative and the indicative, both here and Matthew 24:43 ; 1 John 2:29 . In Luke 10:11 and Hebrews 13:23 γινώσκετε is certainly imperative. The categorical imperative seems of the two the more suited to the apostle's impetuous temperament. The verb γινώσκω , like the Latin nosco , properly denotes "to come to know," "learn," "perceive," "get apprised;"... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Galatians 3:6

Even as Abraham believed God ... - see this passage fully explained in the notes at Romans 4:3. The passage is introduced here by the apostle to show that the most eminent of the patriarchs was not saved by the deeds of the Law. He was saved by faith, and this fact showed that it was possible to be saved in that way, and that it was the design of God to save people in this manner. Abraham believed God, and was justified, before the Law of Moses was given. It could not, therefore, be pretended... read more

Know ye therefore ... - Learn from this case. It is an inference which follows, that all they who believe are the children of Abraham. They which are of faith - Who believe, and who are justified in this manner. Are the children of Abraham - Abraham was the “father of the faithful.” The most remarkable trait in his character was his unwavering confidence in God. They who evinced the same trait, therefore were worthy to be called his children. They would be justified in the same way, and in the... read more

Galatians 3:5-9. He therefore Namely, God; that ministereth to you the Spirit Who is continually giving you additional supplies of grace by the Spirit; and worketh miracles, &c. Bestows the extraordinary gifts of the Spirit upon you; doeth he it by the works of the law Through your hearing and embracing the doctrine of those who inculcate the necessity of observing the ceremonies of the law; or by the hearing of faith By your hearing, receiving, and acquiescing in the doctrine... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Galatians 3:6-14

Example of Abraham (3:6-14)Abraham’s life demonstrates that God justifies on the basis of faith, not law-keeping. (To understand the illustrations that follow, read Genesis 12:1-3; Genesis 13:14-18; Genesis 15:1-6; Genesis 22:15-18.) Abraham was justified not because he kept the law, but because he believed God. The law, with its rules about circumcision, had not yet been given. The real children of Abraham are not those who have been circumcised according to the law, but those who have been... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Galatians 3:6

Even as Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness.By the introduction of this great truth, Paul refuted the notion that the Law of Moses had had anything to do with the salvation of Abraham. Since Abraham was justified, or reckoned righteous in God's sight, without regard to the Law of Moses, Abraham being the ancestor of every Jew on earth, why should any of his remote descendants, much less the Gentile Galatians, think to gain anything at all from it? The argument... read more
