Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Hosea 9:5-6

Hosea 9:5-6. What will ye do in the solemn day What will you do in your captivity, when any of your solemn or festival days come? When you shall find yourselves far from your own country, without temple, without prophets, without priests, without sacrifices, without solemn assemblies; what will be your sentiments? You will doubtless be willing to abstain from labour on those days, as you were wont to do; but your masters will not permit that, but force you to your wonted employments. Though... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Hosea 9:1-17

9:1-13:16 ISRAEL’S PUNISHMENTPunishments to fit the sins (9:1-17)Baal worship and its accompanying immoral rituals were aimed at increasing the produce from farms and vineyards. As a punishment God will destroy the farms and vineyards and send the people into captivity. There they will be forced to eat food that to them is unclean (9:1-3). They will not be able to offer the usual food and wine offerings; in fact, they will barely have enough to keep themselves alive. Meanwhile the land in which... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Hosea 9:6

"For lo, they are gone away from destruction: yet Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them; their pleasant things of silver, nettles shall possess them; thorns shall be in their tents.""Lo, they flee away from destruction ..." This enigmatical passage seems to have a double application. If they shall attempt to flee into Egypt to escape the Assyrians, they shall meet death there just the same; and, then there is the implication for the whole nation of the northern kingdom going into... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Hosea 9:6

Hosea 9:6. The pleasant places, &c.— The precious things which they had purchased for silver. The words are obscure; but the meaning seems to be, that the Israelites, upon the approach of the enemy, should bury in the earth the more valuable parts of their furniture. read more

2. Israel’s inevitable judgment 9:1-11:7This section of prophecies continues to record accusations against Israel, but the emphasis on the inevitability of coming judgment increases. Also in contrast to chapter 8, this section is not a speech by Yahweh but one that Hosea delivered about Him. [Note: See Charles H. Silva, "The Literary Structure of Hosea 9-14," Bibliotheca Sacra 164:656 (October-December 2007):435-53, for a literary analysis of this section of Hosea.] read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Hosea 9:6

The Israelites would leave their land because of the destruction Yahweh would send. Egypt and Memphis, as two undertakers, would bury the exiles. Memphis (near modern Cairo) was an Egyptian city famous as a burial site because of the pyramid tombs there. Back in the land weeds would overgrow the Israelites’ abandoned treasures, and thorns would take over their houses (cf. Deuteronomy 28:36-46). read more
