The Pulpit Commentary - Mark 10:17-23

The rich man's temptation. I. THE RICH MAN FEELS THE NEED OF SALVATION . "Money answereth all things," but only in a limited sphere after all. Riches bind as well as set free; close certain doors to the spirit, as well as open them to others. The poor man knows "straitness" of one kind, the wealthy man another. Could he but unite the advantages of wealth with freedom and joy of spirit! II. SALVATION IS POSSIBLE TO THE RICH MAN . But the practical... read more

Parallel passages: Matthew 19:16-30 ; Luke 18:18-30 .— 1. The rich young ruler ' s great refusal. I. HIS APPLICATION . 1 . The position of this man. We have in this section a most interesting narrative. The subject of it was a young man, in the bright and beautiful prime of life, as St. Matthew tells us; a ruler of the synagogue, as St. Luke informs us; an exceedingly rich man, as all three synoptists relate; for St. Luke tells us he was very rich , and St.... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Mark 10:18

Why callest thou me good ? According to the best authorities, the words in St. Matthew ( Matthew 21:17 ) run thus: "Why askest thou me concerning that which is good? One there is who is good." The word "good" is the pivot on which our Lord's answer turns, both in St. Matthew and here. The question is doubtless put to test the young ruler's faith. If, as may be supposed, the young man used the term, "good Master," as a mere conventional expression, it was not the proper epithet to apply... read more

See this passage illustrated in the notes at Matthew 19:16-30.Mark 10:17Gone forth - From the place where he had been teaching.Into the way - Into the road or path on his journey.Running - Thus showing the intensity with which he desired to know the way of life. Zeal to know the way to be saved is proper, nor is it possible that it should be too intense if well directed. Nothing else is so important, and nothing demands, therefore, so much effort and haste.Mark 10:19Defraud not - Do not take... read more

Mark 10:17-22. There came one running, &c. See notes an Matthew 19:16-22. And he answered, Master, &c. He stands reproved now, and drops the epithet, Good. Jesus, beholding him And looking into his heart; loved him Doubtless for the dawnings of good which he saw in him; and said to him Out of tender love, One thing thou lackest The love of God, without which all religion is a dead carcass. In order to this, throw away what is the grand hinderance of it. Give up thy great... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Mark 10:17-31

110. The rich young man (Matthew 19:16-30; Mark 10:17-31; Luke 18:18-30)A wealthy young man came to Jesus and asked what special deeds he should do to gain eternal life. Jesus responded that there was no need to ask him, because God had already told him in the Ten Commandments what he should do (Matthew 19:16-19). The man boasted that he had kept most of the commandments, but Jesus saw that at least he had failed in the last, which said ‘Do not covet’. While people around him were suffering... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Mark 10:17

And as he was going forth into the way, there ran one to him, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?THE INTERVIEW WITH THE RICH YOUNG RULERThis is a picture of youth at its glorious best. The subject before the Lord was presented as a rich man by all three synoptics; but Matthew (Matthew 19:22) added the detail concerning his youth, and Luke supplied the information that he was a ruler (Luke 18:18). These "matchless touches" were not... read more

And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good save one, even God.Erdman is certainly correct in his comment on this: "It is a mistake to suppose that Jesus denies his own sinlessness, or disclaims divinity."[23] "The perfect goodness of God was a universal doctrine of Judaism";[24] and it is evident that the Lord was here building the young man's thoughts toward the recognition of Jesus as God. It is the equivalent of our Lord's saying, "Look, don't you know that if I am good,... read more
