The Pulpit Commentary - Psalms 106:32

They angered him also at the waters of strife ; or, "at the waters of Meribah" (Revised Version, Kay, Cheyne); comp. Numbers 20:2 , Numbers 20:10 , Numbers 20:13 . So that it went ill with Moses for their sakes. Moses was not punished for the people's sin, but for his own sin ( Numbers 20:10-12 ), to which theirs led. The expression, "for their sakes," is used loosely (comp. Deuteronomy 1:37 ; Deuteronomy 3:26 ). read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Psalms 106:33

Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips. One man's sin often leads to another's, but does not necessitate it. The people "provoked Muses' spirit" by their murmurs and reproaches ( Numbers 20:3-5 ). Moses, being provoked, made his rash utterance ( Numbers 20:10 ). He was vexed, impatient, carried away by a gust of passion, and made the unfitting speech, "Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of the rock?" speaking as if the power were his... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Psalms 106:32

They angered him also at the waters of strife - Numbers 20:3-13. They complained of the lack of water. They wished that they had died as others had done. They murmured against God as if he could not supply their needs. They showed an unbelieving and rebellious spirit - provoking God, and tempting Moses to in act of great impatience by their conduct. In Numbers 20:13, this is, “the waters of Meribah;” - margin, “strife.” This is the meaning of the Hebrew word. The place took its name from the... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Psalms 106:33

Because they provoked his spirit - literally, “They made his spirit bitter,” or they embittered his soul. They threw him off his guard, so that instead of manifesting the meekness and gentleness which so eminently characterized him in general (see Numbers 12:3), he gave way to expressions of anger. See Numbers 20:10.So that he spake unadvisedly with his lips - Passionately; in a severe, harsh, and threatening manner. He did not bear with them as he should have done; he did not refer to God, to... read more

Psalms 106:32-33. They angered him also at the waters of strife Of which see Numbers 20:3-5. It went ill with Moses for their sakes Or, because of them, upon occasion of their unbelief and murmuring, whereby he was provoked to speak unadvisedly, as it here follows. Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Psalms 106:1-48

Psalms 106:0 Israel’s faithlessness to GodLike the previous psalm, this psalm recounts the history of Israel. But whereas Psalms 105:0 emphasized God’s faithfulness, Psalms 106:0 emphasizes Israel’s unfaithfulness and the punishments it suffered as a result.Since God is good, people should praise and obey him. Then they will enjoy, as individuals and as a nation, the full blessings God desires for them (1-5). The psalmist admits, however, that he and those of his generation have sinned as did... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Psalms 106:33

Psalms 106:33. So that he spake unadvisedly— The word unadvisedly is added in the Translation. The original says only that he spake with his lips: the speaking with the lips, being a thing in itself indifferent and innocent, can only be concluded ill from the influence which the preceding words seem to have upon it. They provoked his spirit so that he spake with his lips; i.e. "He spake passionately as one provoked." His passionate words, Num 20:10 express such distrust and impatience as did... read more
