Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Revelation 10:1-11

Interval before the seventh trumpet (10:1-11)During the lengthy interval before the blowing of the final trumpet, John has several other visions. First he sees a huge angel towering over land and sea, and holding a small scroll in his hand. The meaning apparently is that this angel is to make announcements that will affect the whole world. This results in a further series of visions, the seven thunders, but John is not allowed to record them (10:1-4). The angel announces that when the seventh... read more

and he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left upon the earth; This verse introduces the principal theme in this chapter; namely, "the little book open" in the hand of a mighty angel. Pieters titled this chapter, "The Great Angel and the Little Book,"[20] and we would like to change that by the addition of a single word: "The Great Angel and the Little Book Open."And he had in his hand a little book open ... 2. he had—Greek, "Having." in his hand—in his left hand: as in Revelation 10:5 (see on Revelation 10:5- :), he lifts up his right hand to heaven. a little book—a roll little in comparison with the "book" (Revelation 10:5- :) which contained the whole vast scheme of God's purposes, not to be fully read till the final consummation. This other, a less book, contained only a portion which John was now to make his own (Revelation 10:9; Revelation 10:11), and then to use in prophesying to others. The... read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Revelation 10:2

The little scroll in his hand may be different from the scroll Jesus Christ unrolled (Revelation 5:1; Revelation 6:1). John used a different and rare Greek word to describe it (biblaridion, not biblion). The tense of the Greek verb translated "was open" (perfect passive) indicates that someone had opened it and it was then open in his hand. It probably represents a new revelation from God (cf. Ezekiel 2:9 to Ezekiel 3:3; Jeremiah 15:15-17). The angel stood astride the earth and the sea... read more

FIRST SCENE OF THE INTERPOSED VISION.(1, 2) And I saw . . .—Translate, And I saw another mighty angel descending out of the heaven, clothed with a cloud, and the (not “a”) rainbow upon his head, and his face as the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire, and having in his hand a little book (or, roll) open. Many have thought that this angel can be none other than Christ Himself. It must be acknowledged that the description is such that we might well hesitate to apply it to any but our Lord; but,... read more

Revelation 10:7 Compare Savonarola's outburst, with a similar oxymoron, in his Advent addresses to the Florentines in 1494. After a scathing exposure of Rome's iniquities, he cries: 'Hasten the chastisement and the scourge, that we may quickly return to Thee.... The only hope that now remains to us, is that the sword of God may soon smite the earth.' Reference. X. 8. A. Whyte, Christian World Pulpit, vol. xliii. p. 403.
