The Pulpit Commentary - Zechariah 10:6

House of Joseph; i.e. Israel, or the ten tribes, called Ephraim in the next verse (see note on Amos 5:6 ). Israel and Judah alike shall share in the contest and the victory, under the protection of God. I will bring them again to place them. This is one word in Hebrew, which may mean either "I bring them again," or "I make them dwell." The Authorized Version unwarrantably combines both significations. Septuagint, κατοικιῶ αὐτούς , "I will settle them;" Vulgate, convertam eos. ... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Zechariah 10:6-12

The restoration of Israel. "And I will strengthen the house of Judah," etc. The separate mention in this passage ( Zechariah 10:6 , Zechariah 10:7 ) of Judah, Joseph, and Ephraim, taken together with that of Gilead, Lebanon, Egypt, and Assyria, in Zechariah 10:10 , Zechariah 10:11 , seems an indication that we now have to do especially with Israel "after the flesh." The previous verses spoke of "the times of the Gentiles," and of the great spiritual conquests to be inaugurated... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Zechariah 10:7

They of Ephraim; i.e. as well as Judah, shall be heroes. Not many members of the northern kingdom returned at first from the Captivity; but the prophet gives the assurance that they shall come and prove themselves mighty warriors. As through wine. They shall hasten to the battle cheerfully and exultingly, like men refreshed and strengthened with wine (see Zechariah 9:15 ; Psalms 78:65 , Psalms 78:66 ). Their children shall see it. Though unable to participate in the struggle,... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Zechariah 10:6

I will bring them again to place them - Zechariah seems to have condensed into one word two of Jeremiah, “I will bring them again” unto this place, and “I will cause them to dwell” safely Jeremiah 32:37. Kimchi. It is not a confusion of forms, but the blending of two words into one. So also Ibn Ezra): “The two ideas are here both implied, he will cause them to return to their land, and will cause them to dwell there in peace and security.”For I will have mercy upon them - Dionysius: “For the... read more

And Ephraim, they shall be like a mighty man - Prophecy, through the rest of the chapter, turns to Ephraim, which had not yet been restored. With regard to them, human victory retires out of sight, though doubtless, when their wide prison was broken at the destruction of the Persian empire, many were free to return to their native country, as others spread over the West in Asia Minor, Greece, Rome, and so some may have taken part in the victories of the Maccabees. Yet not victory, but strength,... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Zechariah 10:5-7

Zechariah 10:5-7. And they The Jews, under the conduct of their captains; shall be as mighty men which tread down their enemies God shall inspire them with courage to subdue their enemies, and trample upon their carcasses. This it seems must be understood of the victories obtained by the Jews under the Maccabees, or of those which they shall obtain over their enemies in the latter times, to which the latter part of the chapter seems ultimately to relate. And the riders on horses shall be... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Zechariah 10:1-12

Problems of leadership (10:1-11:3)At the time this prophecy was given, the temple had long been finished and life in Jerusalem was not as it had been previously. Zerubbabel and Joshua had apparently died, and without strong leadership the Jews drifted into the ungodly ways of neighbouring nations. Some were using idolatrous objects as magic charms, in the belief that these would bring good rains and good crops. Zechariah tells them to stop such practices and trust in God alone (10:1-2).God is... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Zechariah 10:6

"And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them back; for I have mercy upon them; and they shall be as if I had not cast them off: for I am Jehovah their God, and I will hear them." We shall begin by noting what is not in the passage. There is no promise here of recreating any secular state, or of providing Israel with an earthly dynasty descended from David, or of giving Israel carnal victories over their political enemies. Of course, the... read more
