The Pulpit Commentary - Psalms 63:8

My soul followeth hard after thee; or, clingeth close after thee (Kay, Cheyne); "Tibi adhaeret teque sequitur" (Gesenius)—longs to come as near to thee as possible; while, on thy part, thy right hand upholdeth me; i . e . with a reciprocal action, thou puttest forth thy right hand to sustain and support me, drawing me to thee, and holding me, as it were, in thy embrace. read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Psalms 63:9

But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth. Professor Cheyne notes that "the psalmist has no sense of any incongruity between deeply spiritual musings and vehement denunciations of his enemies." And this is certainly true. But it is to be remembered that he views his enemies, not merely as his own fees, but as the foes of God and of Israel. As the servant of God, he must hate those who are opposed to God; as the King of Israel, he must hate those... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Psalms 63:8

My soul followeth hard after thee - The word used here - דבק dâbaq - means properly to cleave to; to adhere; to be glued to; to stick fast. Then it means to attach oneself to anything; and then, to pursue or follow after. The idea here is that of adhering to, or cleaving to; and the meaning is, that the psalmist adhered firmly to God, as pieces of wood glued together adhere to each other; that he, as it were, stuck fast to him; that he would not leave him or be separated from him. The language... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Psalms 63:8

Psalms 63:8. My soul followeth hard after thee Pursues communion with thee, and a conformity to thee, with earnest, increasing, and restless desire, lively expectation, and unwearied diligence: follows thee resolvedly, and, as it were, step by step, when thou seemest to depart, and withdraw thyself from me, as the Hebrew phrase here used implies. My soul and spirit cleave, or adhere to thee, (as the word דבקה , dabekah, is rendered, Genesis 2:24; Jeremiah 13:11, and elsewhere,) even... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Psalms 63:9-10

Psalms 63:9-10. But those that seek my soul, &c. That seek to take away my life; shall go into the lower parts of the earth Into the grave; and, if they repent not, into hell. God shall cut them off, and send them to their own place. Their enmity to David, and opposition to the counsel of God respecting him, he foresaw would be their death and their damnation, their ruin and their eternal ruin. They shall fall by the sword Shall die in battle, as he foretold 1 Samuel 26:10, and as... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Psalms 63:1-11

Psalms 61-64 Longing for GodFar from home, weary, depressed and in danger, David seeks refuge and refreshment with God. He trusts that God will bring him safely back to Jerusalem and give him the strength to carry out his promise to lead God’s people in God’s ways (61:1-5). The people with him add their support to his request (6-7), and David responds that he will always remain faithful to his task (8).God alone is the strength of David’s assurance (62:1-2). David’s enemies think they can ruin... read more

DAVID PROPHESIES THE END OF THE REVOLT"But those that seek my soul to destroy it,Shall go into the lower parts of the earth. They shall be given over to the power of the sword:They shall be a portion for the foxes. But the king shall rejoice in God:Every one that sweareth by him shall glory; For the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.""Those ... shall go into the lower parts of the earth" (Psalms 63:9).
