Expositor's Bible Commentary - Zechariah 6:9-15

THE RESULT OF THE VISIONS: THE CROWNING OF THE KING OF ISRAELZechariah 6:9-15The heathen being overthrown, Israel is free, and may have her king again. Therefore Zechariah is ordered-it would appear on the same day as that on which he received the Visions-to visit a certain deputation from the captivity in Babylon, Heldai, Tobiyah and Yedayah, at the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah, where they have just arrived; and to select from the gifts they have brought enough silver and gold to make... read more

CHAPTER 6 1. The eighth vision (Zechariah 6:1-8 ) 2. The crowning of Joshua, the High-Priest (Zechariah 6:9-15 ) Zechariah 6:1-8 . The last vision is the vision of the four chariots. We notice the similarity with the first night-vision. The visions opened with the hosts of heaven upon red, speckled, and white horses. It was a vision of judgment for the Gentiles and a vision of comfort to Israel. In this last vision the chariots of judgment are seen sweeping over the earth. It seems to... read more

6:12 And speak to him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name [is] The {n} BRANCH; and he shall grow {o} up out of his place, and he shall {p} build the temple of the LORD:(n) Meaning Christ, of whom Joshua was the figure: for in Greek they were both called Jesus.(o) That is, of himself without the help of man.(p) Which declares that no one could build this temple of which Haggai speaks, but only Christ: and therefore it was spiritual, and not material; Ha... read more

The Eighth Vision - Four Chariots (vv. 1-8) The last of Zechariah's visions is of four chariots coming forth between the two mountains (JND). Note that the definite article "the" is used here, and inasmuch as the city of Jerusalem has been the main subject of Zechariah's prophecy, it is evident that the two mountains are Mount Zion and Mount Olivet, between which lay the valley of Jehoshaphat. They are said to be bronze (or copper) mountains, emphasizing the holiness of God in government. It... read more

MORE OF THE PROPHET ’S OWN TIME THE GOLDEN CANDLESTICK (Zechariah 4:0 ) The candlestick was a copy of that in the early tabernacle, but with what difference (Zechariah 4:2 )? From what source was its oil supplied (Zechariah 4:3 )? What did this supply of oil from the trees symbolize (Zechariah 4:6 )? The candlestick itself may represent the temple which the Jews were now essaying to build, or the Jewish nation as a whole which was now sought to be re-established and become a light in... read more

Orient. Protestants, "the branch , and he shall grow up out of his place." (Haydock) --- Hebrew, "under or from himself." This alludes to the miraculous birth of Christ, (Isaias xi. 1.) whom the prophet had principally in view; though his hearers might naturally understand (Calmet) Zorobabel, who was to preserve the royal family and build the temple. Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Bible - Zechariah 6:9-15

9-15 Some Jews from Babylon brought an offering to the house of God. Those who cannot forward a good work by their persons, must, as they are able, forward it by their purses: if some find hands, let others fill them. Crowns are to be made, and put upon the head of Joshua. The sign was used, to make the promise more noticed, that God will, in the fulness of time, raise up a great High Priest, like Joshua, who is but the figure of one that is to come. Christ is not only the Foundation, but the... read more

F. B. Hole's Old and New Testament Commentary - Zechariah 6:1-99

Zech 6 THE LAST OF this series of visions meets us as we read the early part of chapter 6. Again, as in the first vision, four horses are seen, but this time in chariots and no riders are mentioned. Again there seems to be some connection with the four great world-empires, that successively follow during the time that Israel is set aside; yet they are stated to be, 'the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth'. In the closing chapters of... read more
