L. M. Grant's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Kings 13:1-25

JEHOAHAZ REIGNS IN ISRAEL (vv.10-13) Jehoash reigned in Judah 40 years (ch.12:1), and in his 23 rd year Jehoahaz took the throne of Israel (v.1). He reigned 17 years, so it would appear both these kings died about the same time, but verse 10 seems inconsistent with this, whatever may be the explanation. Jehoahaz followed the sins of Jereboam the son of Nebat, as his father Jehu had done (v.2). None of the kings who reigned in Israel (the twelve tribes) were godly men, but all followed the... read more

A CENTURY OF ISRAEL AND JUDAH JOASH OF JUDAH (2 Kings 11-12) The chief events of this reign are the rescue of the infant king from the murderous grandmother (2 Kings 11:1-3 ); the coup d’etat of the high priest by which he was raised to the throne (2 Kings 11:4-16 ); the reforms of the high priest as regent of the kingdom (2 Kings 11:17-21 ); the repairing of the temple by the king (2 Kings 12:1-16 ); the surrender to the Syrians (2 Kings 12:17-18 ); and the king’s assassination (2 Kings... read more

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Bible - 2 Kings 13:1-9

1-9 It was the ancient honour of Israel that they were a praying people. Jehoahaz, their king, in his distress, besought the Lord; applied himself for help, but not to the calves; what help could they give him? He sought the Lord. See how swift God is to show mercy; how ready to hear prayer; how willing to find a reason to be gracious; else he would not look so far back as the ancient covenant Israel had so often broken, and forfeited. Let this invite and engage us for ever to him; and... read more

Jehoahaz King of Israel v. 1. In the three and twentieth year of Joash, the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, began to reign over Israel. And reigned seventeen years, or sixteen years and a few months according to the modern exact way of reckoning. v. 2. Inglorious Ends 2 Kings 12:17-21 ; 2 Kings 13:1-9 As long as we are with the Lord, He is with us. Then our enemies are His enemies, and He shows Himself strong on the behalf of those whose heart is perfect toward Him. See 2 Chronicles 15:2 . So Joash found it in the earlier part of his reign. We need to ponder the blessings set out in Psalms 81:14-16 , as guaranteed to the life which is at one with God. But directly Joash listened to the princes and forsook the house of God and gave license... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - 2 Kings 13:1-25

Under Jehoahaz the story of corruption ran on in Israel. It was the story of continuation of evil as moral, and its consequent continuation as punishment. Readiness of God to forgive is revealed in the parenthesis. A consciousness of the terrible condition of the people seems to have taken possession of the king, and he besought the Lord. In answer to his prayer a saviour was raised up. No particulars are here given. In all probability they are to be found in chapter fourteen. Jehoahaz was... read more
