11-26 Samuel, being devoted to the Lord in a special manner, was from a child employed about the sanctuary in the services he was capable of. As he did this with a pious disposition of mind, it was called ministering unto the Lord. He received a blessing from the Lord. Those young people who serve God as well as they can, he will enable to improve, that they may serve him better. Eli shunned trouble and exertion. This led him to indulge his children, without using parental authority to restrain... read more
Hannah Blessed by the Lord v. 18. But Samuel ministered before the Lord, being a child, girded with a linen ephod, a garment for the shoulders patterned after the ephod of the high priest, worn by all priests as a sign of their calling. v. 19. Moreover, his mother made him a little coat, an every-day garment, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice, a close connection thus being maintained between the home of the parents and... read more

Growing before the Lord 1 Samuel 2:12-21 Not only were Eli’s sons strangers to the power of religion in the heart, but they had gone to great lengths of profligacy. They had seized on a larger share of the offering than was prescribed, and their rapacity had made men abhor the sacred rites. It is an awful thing when the inconsistencies of professing Christians cause men to abhor the service of Christ. It will go very hard with them at the last. The Master says that it would have been better... read more
We have the record of the song of triumph sung by Hannah, in which she set forth the might and justice of Jehovah. Thus, in the dark and troublous times, Jehovah is seen acting toward deliverance, by answering the prayer of faith as faith operated in the heart of a simple and trusting woman. There is much human passion manifest in her desire, but the fact that she turned to Jehovah is evidence of her trust in Him; and on the basis of that confidence she prepared a way for the future guidance... read more
‘LOOK ON THIS PICTURE AND ON THAT’‘Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the Lord.… And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the Lord, and also with men.’ 1 Samuel 2:12-Ezekiel : The sacred historian dwells with evident pleasure on the beautiful, holy boyhood of the child who served before the Lord, wearing a linen ephod, and who in the visitations of the night, thrilling to the Divine voice which called him by his name, answered fearlessly, ‘Speak, Lord; for... read more
The Contrasting Behaviour Of Samuel and His Family (1 Samuel 2:18-21 ). In total contrast the young Samuel, dressed similarly to a priest even though still a child, ministered before YHWH, and continued to grow in righteousness. He must have been both bewildered and grieved at what he saw. And no doubt he came in for some stick because of it. But in contrast with the house of Eli, Samuel’s family were greatly blessed. It demonstrated that there were still some who looked faithfully to YHWH. 1... read more

Hawker's Poor Man's Commentary - 1 Samuel 2:20-21
(20) And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home. (21) And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD. How much those gain, who give unto the Lord! Solomon's observation is well founded; He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord: and look what he hath given, he will pay him again.... read more
