1-5 David said not, What magnificent thing shall I do now? or, What pleasant thing? but, What pious thing? that he might have the comfort and benefit of that sacred oracle. Let us bring the ark to us, that it may be a blessing to us. Those who honour God, profit themselves. It is the wisdom of those setting out in the world, to take God's ark with them. Those are likely to go on in the favour of God, who begin in the fear of God. read more

ε. The Removal of the Ark from Kiriath-jearim: 1 Chronicles 13:01 Chronicles 13:1.And David consulted with the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with every leader. 2And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, If it seem good to you, and it be of the Lord our God, let us send quickly unto our brethren remaining in all lands of Israel, and with them the priests and Levites in the cities of their suburbs, that they gather unto us. 3And let us bring again the ark of our God to us; for... read more
David's consciousness of the true strength of the kingdom is manifest in his anxiety concerning the Ark of God. This had been at Kirjathjearim, and neglected for long years. He now set himself to bring it into the midst of the people as a recognition of the nation's relationship to Jehovah. In connection with this action a terrible event taught David a lesson of deep solemnity. If God's order is to be restored, it must be done in His way. The long neglect of the Ark would seem to have... read more
The Ark in the Home of Obed-Edom 2 Samuel 6:1-18 (Compare 1 Chronicles 13:1-14 ) INTRODUCTORY WORDS We have some very solemn lessons to consider. 1. The sacredness of holy things. For several chapters we have studied some things which have had to do with the Ark of the Lord. One thing which we have not thus far suggested is the careless way in which the Ark was handled, first by the Philistines, and later by the men of Beth-shemesh. Neither of the above seemed to realize that there was any... read more
1 Chronicles 13:1-2 Chronicles : . The Bringing up of the Ark from Kiriath-jearim to the House of Obed-Edom ( cf. 2 Samuel 6:1-1 Kings :).— The event here mentioned is put in its wrong place by the Chronicler (see 2 Samuel 5:11-Lamentations :) with the object of emphasizing David’ s zeal for the worship of Yahweh, which is represented as his first care after being made king and the taking of Jerusalem. 1 Chronicles 13:1-Numbers : . An introduction inserted by the Chronicler setting forth his... read more

CRITICAL NOTES.] This chapter corresponds closely with 2 Samuel 6:1-11; but in the first verse of that chapter is stated, with great brevity, what is given here in full (1 Chronicles 13:1-5).1 Chronicles 13:1-5.—The Consultation. Leaders (omit and, for leaders intended) are captains named, i.e., chiefs of people. If civil and military organisation existed before this, “David seems to have been the first to recognise in these officers of the host representatives of the people, to consult them on... read more
Hawker's Poor Man's Commentary - 1 Chronicles 13:5-6
Observe how far the people came, in order to be present at this solemnity. The river of Egypt was the remotest southern part, and Hemath the furthest north. Reader, it is no wonder that pious Israelites, who by faith viewed the ark as a type of the ever blessed Jesus, should come thus far. But, if the believing Israelites felt their minds constrained to take such extensive journeys to see the type, oh! how inexcusable will those be, who have the substance in the gospel, if they neglect so great... read more
