Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Deuteronomy 10:1-11

Warning against stubbornness (9:1-10:11)Moses warned the Israelites not to boast about their coming victories. The conquest of Canaan was by God’s power, not theirs. It was because of the wickedness of the Canaanites, not because of any goodness in the Israelites (9:1-5).Israel, in fact, was a stubborn people, who deserved none of God’s good gifts. Moses reminded them of their rebellion at Sinai, how they promised to obey God’s law, but broke it before it was even written down (6-21; see notes... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Deuteronomy 10:8

"At that time, Jehovah set apart the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, to stand before Jehovah to minister unto him, and to bless in his name unto this day. Wherefore Levi hath no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; Jehovah is his inheritance, according as Jehovah thy God spake unto him. And I stayed in the mount, as at the first time, forty days and forty nights: and Jehovah hearkened unto me that time also; Jehovah would not destroy thee. And Jehovah said unto... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Deuteronomy 10:8

Ver. 8. At that time the Lord separated the tribe of Levi— At that time means not long after Moses came down from the mount the second time, ver. 5. Calmet supposes, that the sacred historian would here insinuate, that the rebellion of Korah happening at Jotbath, (upon which occasion God confirmed the priesthood and the ministry to the tribe of Levi,) it is to this event that Moses alludes in the words, at that time. This phrase is frequently used in the Scripture with some latitude. See... read more

Thomas Constable

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Deuteronomy 10:1-11

God renewed the broken covenant with Israel because of Moses’ intercession, not because Israel deserved it. Moses made the ark (Deuteronomy 10:3) in the sense that he directed Bezalel to make it (cf. Exodus 25:10; Exodus 37:1). "Ark" was a common English word for box, chest, or basket in seventeenth-century England, and most modern English translations still use this old word. Other evidences of God’s grace were His appointment of another high priest when Aaron died (Deuteronomy 10:6) and His... read more
