Hawker's Poor Man's Commentary - Jeremiah 35:12-19

Here we have the application of the history, as the Lord intended it, to Judah and Jerusalem: and a close heart-felt application it is. Reader! do not fail to observe the graciousness of the Lord to his people under all their unworthiness. Was there ever a nation or people so blessed! Was there ever a nation or people so rebellious! How the Chapter closeth, and what blessings to faithfulness are read to us in it! The Lord make it profitable. For if the Lord was well pleased with affection and... read more

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Bible - Jeremiah 35:12-19

12-19 The trial of the Rechabites' constancy was for a sign; it made the disobedience of the Jews to God the more marked. The Rechabites were obedient to one who was but a man like themselves, and Jonadab never did for his seed what God has done for his people. Mercy is promised to the Rechabites. We are not told respecting the performance of this promise; but doubtless it was performed, and travellers say the Rechabites may be found a separate people to this day. Let us follow the counsels of... read more

The Application v. 12. Then came the word of the Lord unto Jeremiah, saying, v. 13. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will ye not receive instruction by which they might be trained properly, to hearken to My words? saith the Lord. v. 14. The words of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not to drink wine are performed, the commands of a mere man having so much weight; for unto this day they... read more

a Lesson from the Rechabites Jeremiah 35:1-19 Among the refugees from the neighboring country who sought asylum within the walls of Jerusalem, was a group of Arabs, known as Rechabites. Probably they encamped in one of the open spaces. They clung tenaciously to the regulations promulgated by Jonadab some three hundred years before. See Judges 1:16 ; 2 Kings 10:15 ; 1 Chronicles 2:55 . They drank no wine, did not cultivate the ground, and lived in tents. We do well not to touch alcohol; not... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - Jeremiah 35:1-19

The last of these prophecies of the siege consists of telling the story of the Rechabites and applying it to the existing conditions. Jeremiah told how in the days of Jehoiakim he had been charged to bring the Rechabites into the house of Jehovah and test them in the matter of drinking wine. This he had done, but they, in loyalty to the command of their father, refused. They declared that they had been true to the instructions of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, taking no wine, sowing no seed, and... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Jeremiah 35:12-19

YHWH Uses The Loyalty Of The Rechabites To Their ‘Father’ As A Contrast With The Behaviour Of Judah Towards Their ‘Father’ (Jeremiah 35:12-19 ). The Rechabites had proved their loyalty to their ‘father’ (their forefather) by their maintenance of the requirements that he had laid down, and they had done it over a long period of time. This was in total contrast to Judah’s attitude towards YHWH’s requirements. They had rather ignored YHWH’s requirements for a very long time. Jeremiah 35:12 ‘Then... read more

Jeremiah 35. A Lesson in Obedience from the Rechabites.— These were the descendants of that Jonadab who, in 842, aided Jehu to overthrow the house of Ahab and the cult of Baal of Tyre ( 2 Kings 10:15-Isaiah : *); they were connected with the Kenites ( 1 Chronicles 2:55), from whom the worship of Yahweh may have passed to Israel ( cf. Judges 1:16). The incident here described is to be dated c. 598 ( cf. Jeremiah 35:11 with 2 Kings 24:2), i.e. after the events of Jeremiah 36. Jeremiah 35:1-1... read more

This is but the same threatening confirmed, which we have often met with before, concerning the ruin of this people, only the meritorious cause of it is further amplified, their not paying that homage to God which these Rechabites paid to an earthly parent, and had been steady in the payment of now for three hundred years together. read more
