Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Matthew 7:21

Matthew 7:21. Not every one, &c. The Lord Jesus, having declared the whole counsel of God, with regard to the way of salvation, and observed the chief hinderances of those who desire to walk therein, now closes the whole with these and the following weighty words; thereby, as it were, setting his seal to his prophecy, and impressing his whole authority on what he had delivered, that it might stand firm to all generations: that saith, Lord, Lord That is, that makes a mere profession of... read more

Matthew 7:22-23. Many will say to me in that day Many, both preachers and hearers, both ministers and people, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? Have we not declared the mysteries of thy kingdom; preached excellent sermons; written edifying books; explained and enforced the doctrines of thy word, even the prophecies thereof, and shown their fulfilment: nay, have we not ourselves foretold future events, and in thy name have cast out devils From those possessed by them, and... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Matthew 7:13-29

45. The two ways (Matthew 7:13-29; Luke 6:43-49)There are two ways of life. One is the easy way of pleasing self, which most choose and which leads to destruction. The other is the narrow way of denying self for Jesus’ sake, which leads to life (Matthew 7:13-14).One reason why many do not follow the narrow way is that they are deceived by those who teach their own views on how people can find meaning in life. Their teaching at first sounds reasonable, but in the end it proves to be destructive.... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Matthew 7:21

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven.False teachers are clearly religious persons, crying, "Lord, Lord." Their failure is not that of inactivity but indulgence in the wrong activity. They not only deceive but are themselves deceived, as appears in what follows. Their grand error is in doing their own will instead of Christ's. read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Matthew 7:22

Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works? The fact that "many" such persons exist identifies them as followers of the broad way. The religious nature of their errors is emphasized by their prophesying, casting out demons, and doing many mighty works in Christ's name. What was wrong with all this? They did those mighty works in Christ's name but without his authority or sanction. No one can... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Matthew 7:21

Matthew 7:21. Not everyone that saith, &c.— That is, "Among those who acknowledge me for the Messiah, none but such as do the will of God shall be admitted into his kingdom:" not a bare profession of religion, but a conscientious performance of the duties of it, as the fruits of living faith in him, will stand the test in the great day of account. Here the kingdom of heaven must signify that of glory above. Compare ch. Matthew 8:11. Luk 13:28 and Olearius on the text. read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Matthew 7:22

Matthew 7:22. In that day— That is, the day of judgment so called by way of eminence. Instead of devils, Dr. Heylin reads daemons; for as an evil spirit is called by two different names in the original; namely διαβολος, where it is spoken of as the tempter or accuser of mankind, and διαμων, where bodily possessions are spoken of, it would be proper to render the first by devil, and the second by daemon. There certainly is a material difference, though we can give no satisfactory account of it.... read more

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible - Matthew 7:21

21. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord—the reduplication of the title "Lord" denoting zeal in according it to Christ (see :-). Yet our Lord claims and expects this of all His disciples, as when He washed their feet: "Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am" ( :-). shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven—that will which it had been the great object of this discourse to set forth. Yet our Lord says warily, not... read more
