The εἰστήκεισαν δὲ implies the conditions under which the first fearful fall of Peter was accomplished. Now the servants and the officers were standing £ (imperfect tense), having made ( πεποιηκότες , perfect participle) a fire of coals ( ἀνθρακιάν ), congeries prunarum ardentium (cf.
