The People's Bible by Joseph Parker - Nehemiah 11:1-36

Nehemiah 11:0 There is a close connection between this chapter and the opening portion of Nehemiah 7:0 . The thought of the writer, or compiler, goes back to what was said in chap. Neh 7:4 of the scant population of Jerusalem, and he proceeds to tell us how the deficiency was remedied. read more

F. B. Hole's Old and New Testament Commentary - Nehemiah 11:1-99

Nehemiah 11 THE TWO VERSES that open chapter 11 may perhaps surprise us. We might have thought that, Jerusalem now being a walled city, there would have been strong competition among the people for the privilege of dwelling in it, but evidently it was not so. On the contrary, the country towns of Judah were more attractive, and therefore lots were cast, and one in ten of the people, on whom the lot fell, had to dwell in the city and if any offered themselves willingly to dwell there, the... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - Nehemiah 11:1-36

We now begin the third and final division of the Book, in which is set forth the arrangements made for settlement of the cities. It is the last piece of history which the Old Testament contains. Some revelation of later conditions is obtainable from the study of the prophets, but nothing more is directly written until, after a lapse of four centuries, the history is resumed in the New Testament. In this chapter begins the account of the settlement of Jerusalem particularly. Perhaps not more... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Nehemiah 11:21

The Nethinim (Nehemiah 11:21 ). We already know from Nehemiah 3:26; Nehemiah 3:31 that the Nethinim (given ones) dwelt in the Ophel. They were lower level Temple servants previously given by the kings for Temple service. They had probably largely been taken as prisoners of war, but were now fully integrated into Israel, and appeared to take pride in their status, as is demonstrated by the number who returned from Exile (Nehemiah 7:60). We must remember that they chose to return. Apart from 1... read more
