The Cells of the Priests v. 1. Then He brought me forth into the utter court, the outer court of the Temple, the way toward the north; and He brought me into the chamber, a structure containing cells, that was over against the separate place, thus at least partly hiding this place, where refuse was stored, and which was before the building toward the north. v. 2. Before the length, that is, in front of the long side of this cell-building, of an hundred cubits was the north door, and the... read more
CHAPTER 421And he led me forth to the outer court, the way northwards, and brought me to the chamber [that is, what there was of chambers] which is over against the gizrah, and [in fact] which is over against the building, toward the north. 2Before the length [in front of the length] of a hundred cubits, the opening toward the north, and the breadth fifty cubits. 3Over against the twenty of the inner court, and over against the pavement of the outer court; gallery [was] before gallery in the... read more
The next section of description deals with the general scheme of buildings surrounding the Temple proper. On the north and south sides were chambers, which are described. Finally, the outside measurements of the whole Temple buildings were given. Passing through the east gate, the angel... read more
The Measuring of the Temple (Ezekiel 40:5 to Ezekiel 42:20 ). The measuring made clear to the people a number of facts which they needed to learn. Firstly it stressed... read more
‘Now the upper chambers were smaller, for the galleries took away from these, more than from the lower and middlemost in the building. For they were in three storeys, and they did not have pillars like the pillars of the courts. Therefore the uppermost was set back more than the lowest and the middlemost from the ground.’ We do not know the meaning of the technical word translated ‘galleries’ which makes exactness difficult here, but the main point is clear, that there were three storeys and... read more
‘And the wall that was outside by the side of the chambers, towards the outer court before the chambers, its length was fifty cubits. For the length of the chambers which were in the outer court was fifty cubits. And lo those before the temple were a hundred cubits.’ This building was of fifty cubits length so that in order to match the hundred cubit building nearer to the sanctuary a further wall was built of fifty cubits. read more
Ezekiel 42:1-2 Chronicles : . On the northern ( Ezekiel 42:1) and southern ( Ezekiel 42:10) sides of the inner court and facing the Temple were two blocks of three-story buildings used as refectories ( Ezekiel 42:13) and dressing rooms ( Ezekiel 42:14; cf. Ezekiel 44:19) for the priests. read more
Were shorter: at first view it should seem to refer to the length, but indeed it refers to the height of the chambers, of which the lowest chamber was highest pitched from the floor to the ceiling; the second lower pitched than the first, yet of greater height than the uppermost between the floor and ceiling. The galleries were higher than these: possibly, there might be over the uppermost chambers a fiat roof, on which, as on a gallery, they might walk from one end to another, and therefore... read more
