F.B. Meyer's 'Through the Bible' Commentary - 2 Corinthians 8:16-24

“Things Honorable” Both to God and Men 2 Corinthians 8:16-24 Those who handle the gifts of the Church should be extremely careful that all their financing be above the slightest suspicion. The Apostle shrank from handling these gifts himself, lest any should insinuate that he was appropriating them to his personal use. Even when we have no reason to accuse ourselves in the sight of the Lord, we should be careful of appearances in the sight of men; and whatever is entrusted to us should be... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - 2 Corinthians 8:1-24

The apostle now turned to the subject of the collection for the saints at Jerusalem, concerning which he had written in his previous letter ( 1Co 16:1-24 ). He cites the example of the churches in Macedonia. They gave themselves (1) to the Lord, (2) to the apostles and fellow saints. This action of the Macedonian Christians is in harmony with the Spirit of the Christ. While careful to tell them that he is not speaking by way of commandment, he yet gives them his judgment, and it is that as... read more

Wells of Living Water Commentary - 2 Corinthians 8:1-24

The Grace of Giving 2 Corinthians 8:1-24 INTRODUCTORY WORDS Our Lord lifts Christian liberality out of the mire of coercive necessity, into the realm of grace. As introductory to this sermon on giving, we will show this Divine conception, and discuss "giving" in its relation to grace. 1. In 2 Corinthians 8:1 giving is spoken of as the grace of God bestowed on the Churches of Macedonia. We all know what God's grace toward us was. It was unmerited favor, freely bestowed. Among certain saints,... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Corinthians 8:1-24

A PLEA CONCERNING THE PAYING OF THEIR ‘DEBT’ TO THE JERUSALEM CHURCH BY MEANS OF ‘THE COLLECTION’ WHICH WAS TO BE FOR THE RELIEF OF THE EXTREME POVERTY OF THE SAINTS IN THAT CHURCH AND WHICH WOULD ITSELF BE A CONTRIBUTION TO THE FORWARD GOING OF THE OVERALL PURPOSES OF GOD (2 Corinthians 8:1 to 2 Corinthians 9:15 ). This next section of the letter deals with Paul’s activities in collecting money for "the poor among the saints in Jerusalem" (Romans 15:26). He had declared his great concern... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Corinthians 8:16-24

He Is Sending Three Representatives To See To The Collection and To Their Spiritual Welfare, One Of Whom Is Titus Whom They Know Well (2 Corinthians 8:16-24 ). Three was the number of completeness from when numbers were first used, for originally men could only count up to three, which represented everything that was, apart from man and his mate, (and which is still true in some parts of the world today). Thus three representatives could be seen as the full number required. read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Corinthians 8:24

‘Show you therefore to them in the face of the churches the proof of your love, and of our glorying on your behalf.’ Thus to such honoured men they are to show, as it were in the presence of the churches whom they represent, the proof of their love, the proof that they are really what Paul has boasted they are, by their generous giving. How can they do less before those who are not only the glory of the churches but are ‘the glory of Christ’, there to oversee what they will do. ‘Our glorying on... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Corinthians 8:16-24

2 Corinthians 8:16-Jeremiah : . Paul commends the three messengers who are going to Corinth on the business of the collection. One of these was Titus, and he looked on the matter in the same way as Paul. There were two others, whose names he probably wrote, though for some unknown reason they were afterwards erased. The first of these, who may possibly have been Luke, was already favourably known to all the churches through his work for Christ, and had been chosen “ by the churches” to assist... read more

Matthew Poole

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - 2 Corinthians 8:24

The chapter concludeth with an exhortation to their liberality, backed with a heap of arguments. 1. It would be an evidence of their love to God, to their afflicted brethren, and to the apostle. 2. It would be a proof of it to those messengers of the churches, and to the churches whose messengers they were. 3. It would evidence that the apostle had not, to Titus and others, boasted on their behalf in vain. read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - 2 Corinthians 8:1-24

CRITICAL NOTESObserve: 1. 2 Corinthians 8:1 to 2 Corinthians 9:15 is one continuous section, concerned with the completion of the Corinthian contribution to Paul’s great Jerusalem Christian Poor Relief Fund. Mentioned 1 Corinthians 16:1. where see for this Collection generally. 2. The section is characterised by a specialised use of χάρις (= grace, generally, but here also) “gift,” or “bounty,” as in 1 Corinthians 16:3 (2 Corinthians 8:1; 2 Corinthians 8:4; 2 Corinthians 8:6-7; 2 Corinthians... read more

Chapter 8Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit [or we would bring to your remembrance] of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; How that in a great trial of affliction, the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality ( 2 Corinthians 8:1-2 ).And so, though they were impoverished themselves, they were extremely liberal. They say that poor people usually give much more to the poor than do wealthy people, because the poor people... read more
