It should be rendered, as by Keil, It shall eat up thy sons and thy daughters: it shall eat up thy flocks and thy cattle; eat up thy vine and thy fig tree. They shall impoverish Rather, it shall break down. The word is used besides only in Malachi 1:4. read more

The description here of unblushing immorality and total disorganisation leads Kimchi and others to date this chapter after Josiah’s times; but it is not necessary; ostentatious reform and superficial religion may be synchronous with abandoned impiety and grossest corruption.
