The Popular Commentary by Paul E. Kretzmann - Matthew 27:62-66

Guarding against the theft of the body: v. 62. Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, v. 63. saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said while He was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. v. 64. Command therefore that the sepulcher be made sure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night, and steal Him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead; so the last error shall be... read more

Lange's Commentary on the Holy Scriptures: Critical, Doctrinal and Homiletical - Matthew 27:57-66

ELEVENTH SECTIONTHE BURIAL. THE SEPULCHRE SEALEDMatthew 27:57-66(Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56.)57When the even [evening] was come, there came a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple [who had become a disciple of Jesus]:81 58He went to Pilate, and begged [asked for] the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commandedthe body82 to be delivered. 59And when Joseph had taken the body, he83 wrapped itin a clean linen cloth, 60And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn... read more

the Closed and Guarded Tomb Matthew 27:57-66 Fear not to entrust yourself to God in death. If you yield up your spirit and commend it to the Father’s hands, He will provide for it and for your body also. He has His Josephs everywhere. He will provide loving hands for the body, which was the shrine and casket of the precious jewel that He bought at so great a cost. Precious in His sight is the death of His saints, Psalms 116:15 . The kings and princes of this world set themselves to guard... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - Matthew 27:1-66

The morning saw the plot hatched in the night carried into effect. This is chronicled in the first two verses of the chapter. The picture of Judas in his remorse is very terrible. Pilate stands out as a warning against the policy of expediency. He was convinced of the innocence of Jesus, and his conscience- perhaps more acute that day than it had been for a very long time- very plainly revealed to him that his duty lay in releasing the Prisoner. However, he endeavored to secure himself and... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 27:55-66

Jesus Body Is Laid In A Splendid Tomb; The Chief Priests And Pharisees Seal The Tomb And Put A Guard On It So As To Keep Him There; An Angel Opens The Tomb To Reveal That Jesus Has Risen (27:55-28:6). In this subsection we have centrally a picture of the vain arrangements of men by which they hope to thwart God and prevent Jesus from rising, while on one side of this we have God’s arrangement for His Son to have a splendid new tomb, and on the other God’s arrangement to open that tomb so as to... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 27:62-66

A Guard Is Set On Jesus’ Tomb In Order To Ensure That The Body Is Not Stolen (27:62-66). There is nothing that reveals the truth about people more than their interpretation of the anticipated action of others. That is why you ‘set a thief to catch a thief’. It is because they both think in the same way. And sadly that is why these particular Pharisees who came to the Chief Priests, and then to Pilate, thought as they did. It was because they themselves would have felt able to be free with the... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 27:66

‘So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, the guard being with them.’ The consequence was that the guard was set. And in order to make sure that there was no funny business a seal was placed on the stone in such a way that if it was moved it would be apparent to all. Thus the tomb was made as sure as it could possibly be. Note. Are There Any Grounds For Suggesting That No Guard Was Set? The main grounds for such an argument is the fact that it is not mentioned by anyone... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 27:62-66

Matthew 27:62-Revelation : . The Guarding of the Tomb (Mt. only).— The story arose as a reply to Jews who averred that the disciples had removed the body of Jesus, itself a reply to the disciples’ assertion of the empty grave ( cf. Matthew 28:11-Ezra :). It is a relic of controversy “ in which each side imputed unworthy motives to the other and stated suggestions as established facts.”— the day after the preparation ( Matthew 6:2) is a curious paraphrase for “ the Sabbath.” read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Matthew 27:62-66

This part of the history is recorded by no other evangelist: the recording it by Matthew contributes yet further to evidence the truth of Christ’s resurrection; for here was all imaginable care taken to prevent a cheat in the case. The next day, that followed the day of the preparation, must be the sabbath day, Mark 15:42. These superstitious hypocrites, that quarrelled with our Saviour for his disciples (being hungry) plucking ears of corn on the sabbath day, and for his healing him that had a... read more
