F.B. Meyer's 'Through the Bible' Commentary - Joshua 24:1-15

the Lesson of Israel’s History Joshua 24:1-15 The previous chapter contains Joshua’s own last words of warning to Israel; here he is God’s mouthpiece: “Thus saith the Lord God of Israel.” There is, first, the recapitulation of past mercy. From time to time we should definitely recall, for our children’s sake, the divine interpositions in our national and domestic life. It is interesting in the opening words to learn that Abraham was called out of an idolatrous family. This was the pit whence... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - Joshua 24:1-33

Here we have the record of the final address of Joshua. In it he first concisely and comprehensively traced the Hebrews' history from the call of Abraham and did so in the form of the speech of Jehovah to them. In the brief compass of eleven verses the pronoun "I" as referring to Jehovah occurs no less than seventeen times. The whole movement emphasized the truth that everything of greatness in the history of the people was the result of divine action. Then he appealed to them with a touch of... read more

Wells of Living Water Commentary - Joshua 24:1-18

Joshua's Farewell Words Joshua 24:1-18 INTRODUCTORY WORDS Before Joshua died he reviewed the history of Israel and in so doing he brought out the four great patriarchs who were so prominently aligned to Israel's call and life. 1. There is the remembrance of Abraham. The Bible has, in the New Testament, many backward glances at the life and words of Abraham. The Jews delighted in saying, "We have Abraham to our father." Abraham was a great and worthy follower of Christ. Christ said of... read more

Wells of Living Water Commentary - Joshua 24:13-28

The Consecration of the People Joshua 24:13-28 INTRODUCTORY WORDS The time comes sooner, or later, when we must all lay down the yoke which we have been wearing for God. We cannot always serve, no matter how faithful we may have been, nor how successfully we may have wrought our task. Joshua had been a valiant leader, and he had been faithful in all things. Now, at the end of his days he saw fit to gather all Israel together that they might present themselves before God. When they were all... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Joshua 24:12

‘ And I sent the hornet before you, who drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites, not with your sword, nor with your bow.’ The ‘two kings of the Amorites’ may be specific, or the word ‘two’ may be used as meaning ‘a few’ as it often does. Compare the ‘two sticks’ of the widow of Zarepath (1 Kings 17:12). These were probably not Sihon and Og but two (or ‘a few’) kings whom they were called on to fight on the west side of the Jordan. We do not know which ones.... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Joshua 24:13

“ And I gave you a land for which you did not labour, and cities which you did not build, and you dwell in them. From vineyards and oliveyards, which you did not plant, you eat.” This was a reminder of the specific promises that it would be so (Deuteronomy 6:10-11). Land already prepared for sowing, cities already built, for living in, and vineyards and oliveyards already planted, for eating from. So ends the preamble that describes what the Great Deliverer has done for them, and what He has... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Joshua 24:12

The hornet; either, 1. Figuratively, i.e. terrors and plagues, or other destroying judgments. Or, 2. Properly so called. See Poole "Exodus 23:28". And this being done before Joshua’s entrance into Canaan, it is not strange if it be not mentioned in this book or record of Joshua’s actions. Not with thy sword, nor with thy bow; for though thou didst fight with them, and prevail against them in battle, yet this was not because thou hadst more force or courage than they; but because by my hornet,... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Joshua 24:1-13

JOSHUA’S FINAL ADDRESS: HIS DEATH AND BURIALCRITICAL NOTES.—Joshua 24:1. To Shechem] This gathering was apparently held a few weeks or months after that named in the previous chapter. There was great appropriateness in the selection of Shechem. Here the covenant was first given to Abram (Genesis 12:6-7); in the immediate neighbourhood Jacob seems to have renewed it (Genesis 33:19-20), and under an oak at Shechem he had “put away the strange gods” of his family (Genesis 35:2-4), as Joshua now... read more

Chuck Smith Bible Commentary - Joshua 24:1-33

Chapter 24Chapter twenty-four, Joshua is continuing this final charge to the children of Israel. Picture now this old man he was. He was faithful to the Lord. He has done a good job, but now he is bent over with age. He has been weakened. His voice is probably shaky and trembling. And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, [Right in the heart of the land there between mount Ebal, and Gerezim.] and he called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, the... read more
