Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers - Isaiah 56:5

(5) Even unto them will I give . . .—The words may refer simply to the spiritual blessedness of the faithful (Revelation 2:17; Revelation 3:5), but the customs of Eastern temples and of the later synagogues suggest that they may refer primarily to the memorial tablets which were put up in such places in commemoration of distinguished benefactors. For “place” read memorial. We note, of course, the special adaptation of the words “better than of sons and daughters” to the case which the prophet... read more

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers - Isaiah 56:6

(6) Also the sons of the stranger . . .—Proselytes also were to share in the blessings of the wider covenant. The words “to serve him” have been referred to some menial offices like that of the Nethinim, “hewers of wood and drawers of water” (Joshua 9:27; Ezra 8:20). The usage of the word, however, limits it to honourable functions. The germ of Isaiah’s thought appears in Solomon’s dedication prayer (1 Kings 8:41-43). It receives its highest development (in its entire separation from the... read more

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers - Isaiah 56:7

(7) Even them will I bring . . .—The words foreshadow the breaking down of the “middle wall of partition” (Ephesians 2:14). Every privilege of the Israelite worshipper is to belong also to the proselyte. It is perhaps assumed that the proselyte is circumcised. The development of truth is in such cases gradual, and it was left for St. Paul to complete the work of Isaiah (Romans 2:26-29; Galatians 6:15). read more

Expositor's Bible Commentary - Isaiah 56:1-8

7, Isaiah 55:1-13, Isaiah 56:1-8CHAPTER XXIION THE EVE OF RETURNIsaiah 54:1-17, Isaiah 55:1-13, Isaiah 56:1-8ONE of the difficult problems of our prophecy is the relation and grouping of chapters 54-59. It is among them that the unity of "Second Isaiah," which up to this point we have seen no reason to doubt, gives way. Isaiah 56:9-12 is evidently pre-exilic, and so is Isaiah 59:1-21. But in chapters 54, 55, and Isaiah 56:1-8 we have three addresses, evidently dating from the Eve of the Return.... read more

CHAPTER 56 Salvation Enjoyed by the Strangers and Eunuchs 1. Strangers and servants joined unto the Lord to serve Him and to love the Name of the Lord (Isaiah 56:1-8 ) The first eight verses of this chapter stand by themselves. Strangers to the commonwealth of Israel and eunuchs are gathered in. It is the result of the gracious invitation of the preceding chapter and that again is the result of the work of the Servant of Jehovah and His vicarious suffering. While these verses look forward... read more

56:5 Even to them will I give in my {e} house and within my walls a place and a {f} name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.(e) Meaning, in his Church.(f) They will be called after my people, and be of the same religion: yea, under Christ the dignity of the faithful will be greater than the Jews were at that time. read more

Geneva Study Bible - Isaiah 56:7

56:7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt {g} offerings and their sacrifices [shall be] accepted upon my altar; for my house shall be called an house of prayer for {h} all people.(g) By this he means the spiritual service of God, to whom the faithful offer continual thanksgiving, yea themselves and all that they have, as a lively and acceptable sacrifice.(h) Not only for the Jews, but for all others, Matthew 21:13 . read more

James Gray

James Gray's Concise Bible Commentary - Isaiah 56:1-12

THE MESSIAH REVEALED The thirty-two chapters deal particularly with the Person and work of the Messiah. Isaiah has sometimes been called the evangelical prophet because of the large space he gives to that subject a circumstance the more notable because of the silence concerning it since Moses. The explanation of this silence is hinted at in the lesson on the introduction to the prophets. In chapter 49, the Messiah speaks of Himself and the failure of His mission in His rejection by His... read more

The People's Bible by Joseph Parker - Isaiah 56:1-12

Called to Sanctification Isaiah 56:0 The Lord says his salvation is near to come, and his righteousness is near to be revealed. The Lord takes no note of what we call time. We are the victims of that illusion. We talk of time as if it were of some importance in regard to God's movement; whereas a thousand years in God's sight are but as yesterday, and as a watch in the night; a thousand years are as one day, and one day is as a thousand years: the meaning being that we are to drop this sophism... read more

Hawker's Poor Man's Commentary - Isaiah 56:3-5

The sorrow of Israel was great, if any family or tribe went childless; Jeremiah 22:30 . And the reason, over and above the common affliction of barrenness in a house, was, because the prospect Israel looked to, of Christ coming out of that family, was thereby defeated. Moreover, by the law, any one that had a blemish was deprived of the honour of the priesthood, and admittance into the congregation of the Lord; Leviticus 21:17 . But what a rich consolation did the Lord hold out in this... read more
