Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Leviticus 6:18-23

Leviticus 6:19-Isaiah : . The High Priest’ s Special Offering.— The High Priest offers a meal offering every day, half in the morning, half at evening. The amount is the same as that of the smallest class of sin offerings ( Leviticus 5:11). Priests do not consume their own sin offering; this sacrifice must therefore be burnt entire. The reference to the day of installation ( Leviticus 6:20 a) must be a mistaken gloss (as is clear from “ perpetually,” Leviticus 6:20 b). read more

When he is anointed; when any of them are anointed for high priest; for he only of all the priests was to be anointed in future ages. This law of his consecration was delivered before, Exodus 29:2,Exodus 29:24,Exodus 29:25, and is here repeated because of some additions made to it. Trespass Offerings: and Priestly Consecration OfferingsSUGGESTIVE READINGSLeviticus 6:2.—Trespass against the Lord and lie unto his neighbour. Wrong done to man is done to God. To deceive and defraud our neighbour is an insult to Jehovah. To harm man is to inflict injury on God; as to touch His people is to “touch the apple of His eye”; and as Saul’s persecution of the saints was persecution of Christ Himself (Acts 9:5). Take heed, lest acts of injustice to others so affect heaven as to evoke... read more

Leviticus 6:4. The lost thing which he found. This must be published and restored. If it be a garment, it should either be hung up on the road, or taken to some turnpike house. Else how can we expect to recover what we may lose. He who finds a thing, and conceals it, is regarded by ancient laws as a thief. Leviticus 6:5. Shall add the fifth part. A thief was to restore double, because he was professedly a depredator. Exodus 22:4. But in embezzlement, a shade of human weakness is deemed... read more

the offering: This oblation, which the Jews call a mincha of initiation, seems to have been required of the high priest alone "on the day in which he was anointed," and from that time, every morning and evening, as long as he continued in office, and then in like manner of his successor; for, by "the sons of Aaron," may be understood his descendants and successors in the high priesthood, in their generations.
