Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - John 1:1-18

The Word Was God (John 1:1-18 ). John commences his Gospel by speaking of ‘the Word’ (i.e. the One through Whom God has acted and spoken’), and later he adds, ‘all things were made by Him’ (John 1:3) and ‘the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us’ (John 1:14). It is thus made apparent that ‘the Word’ is Jesus Christ, depicted as the Creator and as God’s word come among man. The letter to the Hebrews contains a similar opening thought, ‘God -- has in these last days spoken to us by a Son, --... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - John 1:2

‘And the Word was with God.’ ‘With God’ in the Greek is ‘pros ton theon’ i.e. ‘towards God’, signifying close relationship. It reflects more than just being ‘with God’. We might translate ‘face to face with God in close relationship’. There was between the Word and God an inter-personal relationship so close that the One blended into the Other. ‘And the Word was God’ (Gk. theos en ho logos). Here the unique nature of the Word is made clear. Note the growth in movement from ‘existing in the... read more

John 1:1-Job : . The Prologue: See Introduction. John 1:1-Deuteronomy : . The Word in Relation to God and Creation.— The references to the language and thought of Genesis 1 are clear. At the time of creation, if the phrase may be allowed, the Word “ was,” eternally existent, in active communion with God, and Divine. The truth about the Logos shows that the Godhead has within itself such distinctions as make possible the exercise, within itself, of the highest activities which correspond to... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - John 1:2

These words of the evangelist are a further confirmation and explication of what the evangelist had said before; asserting the eternity of the Son, and his relation to the Father, and oneness of essence with the Father. Whether the evangelist, forewarned by the Spirit of God, did add this repetition to forearm Christians against those errors which did afterward trouble the church, I cannot say; but certain it is, that these words do effectually confute the Eunomians, who distinguished between... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - John 1:1-18

EXPLANATORY AND CRITICAL NOTESJohn 1:1. In the beginning, etc.—ἐν . The בְּרֵאשִׁית etc., of Genesis 1:0 denotes the beginning of that movement of the divine creative energy from which sprang the visible universe. The Evangelist’s words take us beyond this definite point into the immeasurable eternity. In the beginning the Word was. The Logos was not then called into being. He existed “before all worlds” (John 17:5; John 17:24), i.e. before time, which measures the visible universe, had begun.... read more

Chuck Smith Bible Commentary - John 1:1-51

Shall we turn in our Bibles to the gospel according to John. The gospel of John was the last of the gospels that were written. It was written towards the close of that first century, written by John, for the purpose of convincing people that Jesus is the Christ, that by believing in Him they might have life in His name. John declares his purpose in writing these books. He said, "Many other things did Jesus which are not written, but these things were written that you might believe that Jesus is... read more

John 1:1 . In the beginning was the Word. Εν αρχη ο λογος . John begins the new creation with the words of Moses of the old creation, and continues to speak of Christ in the running language of all the ancient rabbinical theology, that the Word was before Creation was. And the Word was with God. Και ο λογος ην προς τον Θεον . Here the hypostasis, the word used by St. Paul in Hebrews 1:3, or person of Christ is designated. The Father was always a Father, and never without the Son.... read more

John 1:1-5In the beginning was the WordI.THE APOSTLE ASSERTS THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST. 1. His name: the Word. (1) He is the chief subject of Revelation--the Word of promise--the substance of all shadows, types, and prophecies. (2) The medium of God’s communications with the world. To Him the Father communicates Himself in counsel; He, as the Wisdom of God, communicates the Father’s counsels to men. 2. His eternity. Not “from,” but “in,” the beginning. 3. His distinct personality and co-existence... read more

John 1:2The same was in the beginning with God.This repetition teaches I. HOW LITTLE ABLE WE ARE TO COMPREHEND THIS GREAT MYSTERY, which we can but take in by little and little, and must put that together, as children do letters, syllables, and words, till we attain a more full understanding thereof, for our comfort and salvation. II. HOW MUCH AND OFTEN IT IS TO BE INCULCATED UPON BELIEVERS to study again and again, as having more in it than will be seen at first view; and when they have found... read more
