Ye waste places of Jerusalem (comp. Isaiah 44:26 ; Isaiah 49:19 ; Isaiah 64:10 , Isaiah 64:11 ). The city had not been wholly destroyed. Only the temple, the royal palace, and the houses of the nobles had been "burnt with fire" ( 2 Kings 25:9 ; 2 Chronicles 36:19 ). The poorer houses had been left. Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice ; literally, The voice of thy watchers. They have lifted up the voice; they sing (or, shout joyfully , Kay) together.
