Paul E. Kretzmann

The Popular Commentary by Paul E. Kretzmann - Exodus 28:31-43

The Garments Proper v. 31. And thou shalt make the robe of the ephod, the robe of office, on which the ephod was fastened, all of blue, of the hyacinth-colored material which reminded them of the heavenly origin and character of the high-priestly office. This outer garment reached to the knees, leaving the skirts of the inner garment in plain sight. v. 32. And there shall be an hole in the top of it, in the midst thereof; it shall have a binding of woven work, a sort of tape or heavy border,... read more

F.B. Meyer's 'Through the Bible' Commentary - Exodus 28:31-43

Aaron’s Holy Garments Exodus 28:31-43 The robe was worn under the ephod. It was of blue, the color of heaven, of deep lakes, of the gentian and the forget-me-not. It was of one piece. See John 19:23 . It ended in a fringe, in which bells and pomegranates alternated. We are as the skirts of his garments, and the holy oil will reach us there, so the psalmist says. See Psalms 133:2 . We may receive the unction of the holy Christ. The Spirit so richly given to Him may anoint even us, and it will... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - Exodus 28:1-43

The account of the calling and the hallowing of the priests for the exercise of their sacred office is given in detail. The outstanding values are revealed in certain clear statements. That of the purpose of the robing of the priests is stated in the words, ". . . make Aaron's garments to sanctify him, that he may minister unto Me in the priests' office." A careful study of the description of these garments will reveal very much that is important to an understanding of the divine thought... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Exodus 28:40

The Clothing of Aaron’s Sons (Exodus 28:40 ). The other priests, the sons of Aaron, wore simpler clothing. They were seemingly all in white apart from their girdle which connected them with the colours of the Sanctuary. (The latter is assumed from Exodus 39:29, not stated). But these too were ‘holy’ (Exodus 28:4). Exodus 28:40 “And for Aaron’s sons you shall make robes, and you shall make for them girdles, and you shall make caps for them, for glory and for beauty.” The robes of Aaron’s sons... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Exodus 28:41

The Donning of the Priestly Garments (Exodus 28:41 ). This donning is deliberately described before the description of the linen breeches. The latter were not to be seen as priestly garments, but as a necessity by what they achieved. Exodus 28:41 “And you shall put them on Aaron your brother, and on his sons with him, and you shall anoint them, and consecrate them (literally ‘fill their hand’), and sanctify them, that they may minister to me in the priest’s office.” The uniqueness of Moses is... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Exodus 28:42-43

The Linen Breeches To Cover Their Nakedness (Exodus 28:42-43 ). These are very pointedly not put on them by Moses. They are not a part of the official garb as such, although a requirement of the office. For these act to cover the private parts (like underpants). To ‘reveal a person’s nakedness’ was usually to expose their private parts in sexual relations (Leviticus 18:6-19; Leviticus 20:11-21). Exodus 28:42-43 “And you shall make them linen breeches to cover the flesh of their nakedness.... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Exodus 28:1-43

Exodus 28. P ( Exodus 28:26-Hosea :; Exodus 28:41 later). Priestly Vestments.— After the sanctuary and its fittings have been ordered, the vestments for the priesthood come up for mention. For the strange story of the development of the priest-hood in Israel, see pp. 106f. Here we find, no doubt, a simple assumption that Aaron and his sons wore the same vestments as were worn by the Zadokite High Priest and his assistants in the Temple of Zerub- babel. Sir_45:9-22 ; Sir_50:1-21 are a... read more
