L. M. Grant's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Chronicles 21:1-20

THE REIGN OF JEHORAM (vv.1-20) Though verse 1 speaks of Jehoram's reigning when Jehoshaphat died, it is made clear in2 Kings 8:16; 2 Kings 8:16 that Jehoram began to reign before Jehoshaphat's death, for it reads, "In the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab, king of Israel, Jehoshaphat being then king of Judah, Jehoram. the son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, began to reign" (JND Trans.). Evidently Jehoshaphat gave his son the place of reigning along with himself, or as regent. Jehoshaphat... read more

James Gray's Concise Bible Commentary - 2 Chronicles 21:1-20

JEHORAM TO HEZEHIAH JEHORAM (2 Chronicles 21:0 ) Jehoshaphat followed Rehoboam’s example in arranging for his sons (2 Chronicles 21:3 ), but without the hoped-for result (2 Chronicles 21:4 ). Such a brother as Jehoram proved might be expected to act in his kingly capacity as verses five to seven testify. Elijah (2 Chronicles 21:12 ) may be mistaken of the transcribers for Elisha, as the former died earlier (2 Kings 2:0 ); unless we take the view in the margin that this was a “writing” he... read more

2 Chronicles 21:0 1. Now [And] Jehoshaphat slept [lay down] with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned [Jehoram's sole reign now began. He had previously been associated in the kingdom with his father] in his stead. 2. And he had brethren the sons of Jehoshaphat, Azariah, and Jehiel, and Zechariah, and Azariah, and Michael, and Shephatiah: all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel. 3. And their father gave them great gifts of... read more

Hawker's Poor Man's Commentary - 2 Chronicles 21:8-11

Observe how the Lord raiseth up afflictions from the sinner's own backslidings. The Holy Ghost marks this elsewhere in strong expressions; Jeremiah 2:19 . And the history of Jehoram is not singular in proof of it. I believe, if God's people were to watch with a jealous eye, so as to connect their corrections with their sins, they would be led frequently to trace, that punishments spring as naturally out of iniquities, as streams issue from a fountain. read more

Hawker's Poor Man's Commentary - 2 Chronicles 21:12-19

Elijah, the prophet, lived much about the time as Jehoshaphat and Ahab. But Elisha had succeeded him in his office when Jehoram had the government of Judah. It is probable, however, that the reign of Jehoram might have begun before the translation of Elijah; and therefore this written message came to him in the Lord's name from his departing servant. And observe how very awful the contents of it. It first opens to his view, the great enormities he had been guilty of. Impious to God; and cruel... read more

Elias. Le Clerc would read Eliseus. Grotius supposes that all passed in a dream. Others think that Elias had written the letter before his removal from the conversation of men, some years before, foreseeing the impiety of Joram, and leaving the letter with Eliseus, to be delivered unto him. Matthew Henry

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Bible - 2 Chronicles 21:1-11

1-11 Jehoram hated his brethren, and slew them, for the same reason that Cain hated Abel, and slew him, because their piety condemned his impiety. In the mystery of Providence such men sometimes prosper for a time; but the Lord has righteous purposes in permitting such events, part of which may now be made out, and the rest will be seen hereafter. read more
