Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 9:28

‘And it happened about eight days after these sayings, that he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up into the mountain to pray.’ It will be noted that Luke has changed ‘after six days’ to ‘about eight days after’. There is no problem with this mathematically for six whole days could, when taking into account part days, (which was quite normal), be the equivalent of ‘eight days’. But we may ask, why the alteration? It will be noted that Luke has twice previously referred to an... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 9:29

‘And as he was praying, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment became white and dazzling.’ His ostensible purpose in taking them up with Him was in order to pray (Luke 9:28), but as He prayed a great transformation took place in Him. His face shone and His clothing became white and dazzling, and His Apostles were there privileged to see something of the glory of God, of the glory of which He had emptied Himself (John 17:5), and of the glory in which one day He would come... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 9:28-36

Luke 9:8-Zephaniah : . The Transfiguration ( Mark 9:2-Ruth : *, Matthew 17:1-Ruth : *).— Again Jesus is pictured as praying. The theme of His conversation with Moses and Elijah is given, viz. His decease (lit., exodus; significant in connexion with Moses) at Jerusalem. In Luke 9:32 text is better than mg. The pronouns in Luke 9:34 are ambiguous: “ them” and the second “ they” may mean Jesus, Moses and Elijah. In Luke 9:36 follow mg. Lk. omits the discussion concerning Elijah. read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Luke 9:28-36

CRITICAL NOTESLuke 9:28. About an eight days.—I.e. including the day on which the words were spoken and the day on which they were fulfilled. St. Mark says “six days,” reckoning the intervening time. Took.—“Took with Him” is a better reading (R.V.). A mountain.—Rather, “the mountain” (R.V.). It is probable that this was Mount Hermon, as it is the only place within the neighbourhood of Cæsarea Philippi that satisfies the requirements of the case. The summit of Tabor, which is the traditional... read more

Sermon Bible Commentary - Luke 9:28-31

Luke 9:28-31 I. The Transfiguration throws light on the meaning of Christ's Passion. It shows that glory was His natural state, according to His own thought: "Now, O Father, glorify Thou Me with Thine own Self with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was." II. Evidently, one object of this scene was to confirm the faith of the disciples in the Divine Nature of a suffering Redeemer. III. This scene bears close relation to the Resurrection. On the former occasion Christ distinctly... read more

Luke 9:29-30 The Re-appearance of the Departed. I. The Church, perfected and triumphant; the Church, expectant still, in their quiet resting-places; and the Church travailing, conflicting here, in the battlefield of this lower world were all one upon that holy mount. And they all gathered round the same Christ the Friend of all, the Saviour of all, the Lord of all. He was the Spring from which all came. He was the End to which all tended. They all combined to make His kingdom. II. If we pass... read more

And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease, which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter, and they that were with him, were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.THEY, who were the immediate... read more

Chuck Smith Bible Commentary - Luke 9:1-62

Let's turn in our Bibles to the gospel according to Luke, chapter 9.Luke here records the sending of the twelve to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. This is not to be confused with the time that He sent out the seventy. We will get that in the beginning of chapter 10. But here He is sending out the twelve to go throughout the area of Galilee. In fact, to go as far as they can, they are to travel light. Which means that they will be traveling fast, and they will be getting out as... read more
