The Biblical Illustrator - 2 Kings 9:31

2 Kings 9:31Had Zimri peace, who slew his master?Divine purposes and human agenciesThese are not the words of the Spirit of God, but of that wicked witch Jezebel, wife of the idolatrous Ahab. Nevertheless, there is a truth implied in them which it shall be our present business to expound and illustrate. “Had Zimri peace, who slew his master?” What did she mean by this? The answer is in the story of Zimri told in the sixteenth chapter of the first Book of Kings. Elah, son of Baasha, has reigned... read more

2Ki 9:30 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard [of it]; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window. Ver. 30. And she painted her face. ] Heb., She put her eyes in painting, a פיד , φυκος , fucus. This she did ad conciliandum regiam maiestatem, to show herself to Jehu in majesty and royal brightness; for she was extremely proud and arrogant to her very last, and now she would show what a brave spirit she had in this her desperate condition: b and... read more

2Ki 9:31 And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, [Had] Zimri peace, who slew his master? Ver. 31. She said, Had Zimri peace? ] Or, O Zimri - so she calleth Jehu, his master’s murderer, - shall it be peace? thinkest thou to carry it away clear thus? She thought, haply, that being a woman she might say anything, Hecuba-like; and that Jehu would not meddle with her: but he had a particular charge about her, 2 Kings 9:7 ; 2Ki 9:10 and his case was not Zimri’s, who came quickly to an ill... read more

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Kings 9:30

30. Painted her face Better, set her eyes in paint. “The paint used by the Hebrew women was a powder producing a black colour; it was commonly prepared either from antimony, or from lead ore and zinc, which they mixed with water, and spread by means of a needle or probe of silver or ivory upon the borders of the eyelids, so that the white of the eye might appear still whiter by being surrounded with a black margin.” Gesenius. “This,” says Kitto, “is considered to add greatly to the... read more

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Kings 9:30-37

THE FATE OF JEZEBEL, 2 Kings 9:30-37. The tidings of the revolution under Jehu, and of the death of Joram, spread with the greatest rapidity throughout Jezreel, and quickly reached the ears of the haughty Jezebel. One would suppose that on hearing it she would have trembled with terror, and gone to hide herself in some dark recess of the palace. But her fierce, masculine, vindictive spirit asserts its pre-eminence to the very last; and if she too, has to perish with the rest of Ahab’s house,... read more

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Kings 9:31

31. Jehu entered in at the gate Or rather, as the context shows, came up to the gate; that is, the gate of the palace leading into the enclosed court of the palace beyond. This gate seems to have been the royal entrance into the city of Jezreel, so that the palace was at this point built against the outer wall of the city, and to the window over the gate Jezebel had come, in order to look and speak defiance to the approaching destroyer. Had Zimri peace, who slew his master This is her... read more
