Colossians 4:1 . Masters, give to your servants that which is just and equal. Paul doubles the precept here, reminding them that one is their master, who is Lord of heaven and earth. Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:That God would open to us a door of utterance — That is, give us utterance, that we "may open our mouth boldly," Ephesians 6:19, and give us an opportunity of speaking, so that none may be able to hinder. read more
3. A door of utterance The intercession desired is for the removal of any and all hinderances to the free preaching of the gospel, and the furnishing an opportunity to its extension. Was not their prayer really answered, though in a different way, as indeed God often answers, when the apostle’s closer imprisonment resulted in “the furtherance of the gospel?” Philippians 1:12. CRITICAL AND EXPLANATORY NOTESColossians 4:2. Watch in the same.—“Being wakeful.” Here again the apostle changes his language from that used in enjoining the same precepts in Ephesians.
