Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 28:7-20

The Final Triumph (28:7-20). Following this remarkable experience of the women, we now come to the climax of the Gospel, the resurrection appearances and the giving of the Great Commission. The subsection commences with an appearance to the women disciples, (a reminder of God’s interest in the seemingly unimportant who are faithful in worship and service), goes on to deal with men’s vain attempts to deny the resurrection by falsehoods, and finalises in the appearance of Jesus to His disciples... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 28:16

‘But the eleven disciples went into Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had appointed them.’ In accordance with Jesus instructions the eleven Apostles finally went into Galilee to find new truth, in total contrast with the soldiers who had gone to the Chief Priests to be taught lies. And there they went to the mountain that Jesus ‘had appointed them’. This would suggest that prior to His death He had already tried to make arrangements for them to go to Galilee as soon as He was dead, and had... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 28:16-20

Jesus Appears To His Disciples In Bodily Form And Reveals That He Has Been Crowned As Lord Of All. He Sends His Disciples Out To Proclaim The Good News To All Nations And To Call On Them To Observe All His Commandments (28:16-20). Jesus now appears and reveals His new heavenly Kingship, and calls on His disciples to go out in His name in order to make disciples of people from all nations, giving them the assurance that He will go with them and be with them wherever they go, and however long it... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 28:17

‘And when they saw him, they worshipped him. But some doubted.’ It is not likely that the eleven went alone. They could hardly have disappeared from among the other brethren and the sisters without giving a hint of what was happening. And furthermore the angel is said to have declared that the women disciples will be present (Matthew 28:7). Thus ‘they’ here probably has a wider connotation than just the eleven. However Matthew’s main concern is with the eleven to whom the commission will... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 28:16-20

Matthew 28:16-Proverbs : . Conclusion. Jesus Appears in Galilee.—“ The mountain” ( Matthew 28:16) reminds us of Matthew 5:1 or Matthew 17:1. The statement that “ some (rather, they) doubted” brings the narrative into line with Luke 24:37, John 20:25, and in any case points to the gradual nature of the growth of the Resurrection belief. Matthew 28:18 reminds us of Matthew 11:27, but is not like Jesus, and is best taken as “ a ré sumé of the Christian faith and the Church’ s mission.” Matthew... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Matthew 28:16-17

The other evangelists mention several other appearances of Christ, which we shall consider when we come to them. This was in Galilee, upon Christ’s appointment either before or after his resurrection, we cannot certainly say when, or how. Some think (upon what grounds I know not, but because the evangelists mention no more) that this was the famous appearance mentioned by the apostles, when he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once, 1 Corinthians 15:6. The text speaks but of eleven... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Matthew 28:16-20

CRITICAL NOTESMatthew 28:16. Then.—But (R.V.). Certainly not before the second week after the resurrection, and probably somewhat later (Brown). The eleven disciples.—They come forward here as the representatives of the entire band of disciples, and not as the select apostolic college of the Twelve, which makes its first appearance after the selection of Matthias. This distinction is to be found in the remark that “some doubted,” which cannot apply to the Eleven. Reference is made to many... read more

Sermon Bible Commentary - Matthew 28:16-20

Matthew 28:16-20 (with 1 Corinthians 15:6 ) The question meets us today, as we think of the narrative of the text, How do we stand related to that assembly on the Galilean mountain, and to that last command of our adored Lord? The answer which I trust we shall all feel disposed to give is this, that we are related to that assembly just as though we had formed part of it, to that last command as though we had heard it in audible words from the lips of our Lord. That we may be confirmed in... read more

Matthew 28:17 I. Doubting in matters of religion. Doubt arises (1) from ignorance; (2) some kinds of doubt mark the course of inquiry; (3) other kinds indicate moral perversity, and are allied to unbelief. II. The practical influence of doubting in matters of religion. (1) It is no apology for indifference; (2) it ought to stimulate inquiry; (3) it contains an element of belief; (4) it may be an ultimate benefit. G. Chuck Smith Bible Commentary - Matthew 28:1-20

Chapter 28In the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn towards the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. And his countenance was like lightning, and his raiment was as white as snow: and for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the... read more
