SECOND SECTIONTHE JOURNEYINGS (Luke 4:14 to Luke 9:50)A. Nazareth.—The First Rejection of the Holy Son of Man by the Sinful Children of Men. Luke 4:14-3014And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out afame of him through all the region round about. 15And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified [receiving honor] of all. 16And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was,5 he went into the synagogue on the Sabbathday and stood... read more

Luke PREACHING AT NAZARETH Luk_4:21 . This first appearance of our Lord, in His public work at Nazareth, the home of His childhood, was preceded, as we learn from John’s Gospel, by a somewhat extended ministry in Jerusalem. In the course of it, He cast the money-changers out of the Temple, did many miracles, had His conversation with Nicodemus, and on His return towards Galilee met the woman of Samaria at the well. The report of these things, no doubt, had preceded Him, and kindled the... read more

F.B. Meyer's 'Through the Bible' Commentary - Luke 4:14-30

“His Own Received Him Not” Luke 4:14-30 A wide gap occurs here, embracing the important transactions of John 1:29-51 ; John 2:1-25 ; John 3:1-36 ; John 4:1-54 . What a flutter in Mary’s heart when she saw her son sitting in the teacher’s place of His native synagogue! How gratified at the reception given to the opening sentences! What a sword pierced her heart at the sudden revulsion of feeling! They were jealous that He performed only a few private miracles; but He could not do more because... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - Luke 4:1-44

As man Jesus was tempted. All the words with which He rebutted the attacks of Satan were quotations from the divine law for the government of human life. The exhaustive nature of the temptation is revealed in Luke's words, "When the devil had completed every temptation." Evil had nothing more to suggest. The thoroughness of the temptation was the completeness of the victory. The perfect and victorious Man now found His way back to Nazareth, and there, reading from the prophecy of Isaiah,... read more

Wells of Living Water Commentary - Luke 4:14-22

Christ, the Lover of Men Luke 4:14-22 INTRODUCTORY WORDS The endeavor in this study will be to seek the heart of the Saviour, discovering His attitude toward different classes of men among whom He lived and moved during His life on earth. We will seek to discover whether the Lord Jesus was partial to the rich or to the poor. Whether in His choice of followers, He was open toward all. Did Christ live the life of a shut-in? Did He pull the garments of His holiness and superiority close about... read more

James Nisbet's Church Pulpit Commentary - Luke 4:21

PROPHECY FULFILLED‘This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.’ Luke 4:21 Jesus had returned to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. It was now some months since He had left His home to go away to Jordan’s side, where John was baptizing. Now He returned alone. In the meantime many things had happened. The fame of Him had gone through all the region round about. He had taught in their synagogues, being glorified above all; so that now, when He returned once more to His own home and... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 4:16-21

Jesus Reveals Himself As The Spirit Anointed Prophet of Isaiah (4:16-21). In this next passage Jesus reveals that the fulfilment of the prophecy of Isaiah concerning the coming anointed Prophet is to come about through Himself. It commences with His proclamation of Himself as such in the synagogue at Nazareth, and goes on to demonstrate the different ways in which the prophecy will be fulfilled. But there are mixed reactions to Him and in the end they are so angry at His comments that they... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 4:17

‘And there was delivered to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And he opened the book, and found the place where it was written,’ The scroll handed to Jesus was the book of the prophet Isaiah. We do not know whether this was because the reading for the day had been fixed, or simply by the choice of the ruler of the Synagogue. Either way Jesus opened the book at what we know as Chapter 61. This is the description of the Spirit anointed Prophet of the last days. Jesus then read from it. read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 4:18-19

‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Because he anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovering of sight to the blind, To send forth those who are oppressed in deliverance (forgiveness), To proclaim the acceptable year (year of acceptance, time of favour) of the Lord.’ The passage describes the Spirit anointed Prophet and what He will achieve. He will preach Good News to the poor, He will proclaim deliverance to captives, and the... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 4:20

‘And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him.’ Having read the passage standing, a mark of respect for the Scriptures, He gave the scroll back to the Synagogue attendant and then sat down (probably in the special seat allocated) in order to preach. It was quite normal to speak sitting down. And all eyes in the Synagogue were fixed on Him ready for what He had to say. We are intended to sense the expectancy. read more
