Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 24:45

‘Then opened he their mind, that they might understand the Scriptures.’ This may indicate that, as with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (see Luke 24:31) He expounded the Scriptures to them, giving them illumination, or it may be a reference to their receiving the Holy Spirit as described in John 20:22, the ‘Spirit of truth’ of John 14-16. or, of course, both. But His basic purpose was to make clear to them the basis of their message, and to recognise how it pointed to Him. read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 24:46

‘And he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead the third day.” ’ The central point in their message as delivered to them by Him was that these very Scriptures had declared beforehand in writing that the Messiah would have to suffer, and would rise again from the dead on the third day. The idea of the ‘Coming One’ as suffering is found in Isaiah 50:4-8; Isaiah 52:13 to Isaiah 53:12, and also in Psalms 22:6-21; Daniel 7:0 (where the son of... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 24:47

‘And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” The message having been proclaimed it then had to be applied, and here Jesus makes clear that that application has twofold prongs, repentance and forgiveness of sins. Repentance primarily indicates a turning to God, although this unquestionably also includes turning from sin and a change of heart and mind about God and about sin. The Greek word literally means a ‘change of... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 24:48

“You are witnesses of these things.” And the message that has just been described is the message to which they are to be witnesses. That is why they have been called. It is in order to bear witness to the One Who has suffered and risen again so that He might bring them under the Kingly Rule of God. read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 24:44-53

Luke 24:44-2 Thessalonians : . The Last Words and the Ascension.— Jesus reminds His disciples how He had told them that Scripture predictions about Him must be fulfilled. He goes over the ground again (with Luke 24:45 cf. Luke 24:27), and adds that the gospel of repentance and forgiveness in His name should be preached everywhere. It is not clear whether the instruction to preach is regarded as contained in the OT Scriptures. Syr. Sin. has “ in my name,” and perhaps we should take the Gr.... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Luke 24:45

He did not open their understanding without the Scriptures, he sends them thither; and he knew the Scriptures would not sufficiently give them a knowledge of him, and the things of God, without the influence and illumination of his Spirit: they are truly taught of God, who are taught by his Spirit to understand the Scriptures. Christ gives a great honour to the Scriptures. The devil cheats those souls whom he persuades to cast away the Scriptures in expectation of a teaching by the Spirit. The... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Luke 24:46

All the Divine predictions are certain and infallible. The Jews did maliciously and freely prosecute our Saviour to death, and God did certainly foresee how their wills would be determined, and the event was accomplished accordingly. read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Luke 24:47-48

The few words in Luke 24:47 are comprehensive of the great duty of the apostles: 1. To preach repentance and remission of sins. 2. In Christ’s name. 3. To all nations. 4. Beginning at Jerusalem. They were to preach repentance, that is, a turning from sinful courses into a course of life consonant to the will of God; and remission of sins, that is, upon repentance; this they were to preach in his name, which may refer either to their preaching; then our Saviour lets them know that they were to... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Luke 24:44-53

CRITICAL NOTESLuke 24:44. These are the words.—I.e., “this is the meaning of the words.” Probably in Luke 24:44-49 St. Luke gives a summary of Christ’s discourses during the time between the Resurrection and the Ascension. Law of Moses, etc.—Perhaps here we have a reference to the Jewish division of the books of the Old Testament—i.e., into the Pentateuch, the Prophets (Joshua, Judges, four books of Kings, and the Prophets, except Daniel), and the Hagiographa.Luke 24:45. Then opened.—Cf. Luke... read more

Sermon Bible Commentary - Luke 24:46-47

Luke 24:46-47 Our Lord's Last Words. I. The last command of a friend who has left us is commonly regarded with more than usual interest. Whatever else men forget they remember this. It is connected with a moment sacred in their recollections. The last glimpse of the familiar form receding from their view, the vessel long watched amidst the distant haze these or similar remembrances are linked to those words. Nay, sometimes they were the last uttered on earth. The words of the dying oh, how we... read more
