"As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear, So is a wicked ruler over a poor people."Israel had their wicked rulers such as Ahab, Manasseh and many others; but the current century has seen a parade of evil rulers just as wicked and far more powerful; and any people with such a ruler is a "poor" people. read more
"The prince that lacketh understanding is also a great oppressor; But he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days."The antithesis in the second line carries the implication that the oppressive prince or "ruler"[18] is a covetous person greedy for wealth. There is also the implication that, "Such a ruler will not be tolerated very long."[19] Covetousness is idolatry (Colossians 3:5). "Neither the possession of wealth nor the acquisition of it is sinful, but the eager haste of... read more
"A man that is laden with the blood of any person Shall flee unto the pit; let no man stay him.""If a man is burdened with the blood of another, let him be a fugitive until death; let no one help him."[21] This version is better because it makes it clear that it is a sin to aid murderers fleeing to avoid punishment for their crime. read more
Proverbs 28:9. He that turneth away his ear, &c.— "He who will not hearken to what God directs, nor do what he enjoins, has no reason to pretend to ask any thing of him, and in truth were better not to think of him at all: he had much rather we should not use his name at all, than only mention him in our oaths and blasphemies; and that we should never magnify his power, his providence, or his mercy, rather than make use of those discourses to seditious and sacrilegious purposes. If we live... read more

Proverbs 28:12. A man is hidden— Houbigant renders the verse, When just men have the rule, the citizens are much honoured; when a wicked man is in the chief place, they fall. See Proverbs 28:28. This is similar to a sentiment of Mr. Addison's: When vice prevails, and impious men bear sway, The post of honour is a private station. read more
Proverbs 28:15. A ranging bear— A howling bear. Houbigant. Proverbs 28:16. The prince that wanteth understanding] The sense and opposition is better preserved in the LXX: A prince who is straitened in his revenues is generally a great oppressor; but he, &c. read more
Proverbs 28:17. A man that doeth violence— Houbigant has it, If any man is an oppressor, and a lier in wait for blood, when he flieth to a pit, no man shall stop him. That is, according to Grotius, "Whoever oppresses others, so as to shed innocent blood, will not be withheld or stopped, if he should fly towards covered pitfalls; for the enormity of his crimes will steel every one's breast against him, and no one will shew the least pity towards him." read more

"He that covereth his transgressions shall not prosper; But whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall obtain mercy."This admonition should not be construed as teaching any such thing as "auricular confession" after the manner of the Roman church. Christians are not commanded to confess to any kind of prelate, or representative of any church. We are commanded to confess our sins "one to another" (James 5:16); and that is a mutual affair. Also it is said that every tongue shall "Confess to God"... read more
