Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary - Jeremiah 48:14-47

The destruction is here further prophesied of very largely and with a great copiousness and variety of expression, and very pathetically and in moving language, designed not only to awaken them by a national repentance and reformation to prevent the trouble, or by a personal repentance and reformation to prepare for it, but to affect us with the calamitous state of human life, which is liable to such lamentable occurrences, and with the power of God's anger and the terror of his judgments,... read more

And upon Kirjathaim ,.... Of which see Jeremiah 48:1 ; and upon Bethgamul ; this is nowhere else mentioned in Scripture; supposed by Grotius to be the Maccala of Ptolemy, put for Camala: and upon Bethmeon : of which see Isaiah 15:2 . read more

And upon Kerioth ,.... Which once belonged to the tribe of Judah, Joshua 15:25 ; from this place Judas Iscariot is by some thought to have his name; as if it was "Ish Kerioth", "a man of Kerioth". Grotius takes it to be the Goiratha of Ptolemy: and upon Bozrah ; not in Idumea, but in Moab; the same with Bezer, Joshua 21:36 ; and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, for and near ; all the rest of the cities not named, whether nearer or farther off from Aroer. read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Jeremiah 48:1-47

1 . Jeremiah 48:29-38 recur in Isaiah 16:6-10 ; Isaiah 15:4 , Isaiah 15:5 , Isaiah 15:6 ; Isaiah 16:12 , Isaiah 16:11 ; Isaiah 15:2 , Isaiah 15:3 ; not, indeed, without many peculiarities, and those peculiarities are so striking, and so little in harmony with Jeremiah's usual mode of using his predecessor's writings, that some have held that verses 29-38 were inserted by one of Jeremiah's readers. 2 . Verses 43, 44 so closely resemble Isaiah 24:17 , Isaiah 24:18 ... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Jeremiah 48:1-47

The judgment of Moab. As the prophet's "eye in a fine frenzy rolling" sees the flood of the Chaldean invasion sweeping over one after another of the nations, his words flash out in pictures full of energy and fire. If this world's calamities are thus terrible, how shall the awful realities of eternity be contemplated? Why should some of us be so shocked at the strong language of preachers? Strange and fanatical as it may appear, the fury of a Knox is more consonant with much of life and... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Jeremiah 48:17-25

How lamentable that such a glorious sceptre should be broken! But there is no remedy. Even Dibon, that highly honoured town, is disgraced. There is no hiding the sad fate of the Moabites; the crowds of fugitives sufficiently proclaim it. Judgment has been passed upon all the cities of Moab, a long roll of whose names is recited. read more

Kiriathaim (see on Jeremiah 48:1 ). Beth-gamul. Nowhere else mentioned. Beth-meon. Called Baal-meon, Numbers 32:38 ; Beth-baal-meon, Joshua 13:17 . The extensive ruins of Ma'in are a short distance south of Heshbon. read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Jeremiah 48:24

Kerioth . Perhaps a synonym of Ar, the old capital of Moab ( Isaiah 15:1 ). Hence in Amos 2:2 , "I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth." Bozrah . The capital at one time of the Edomites (see Jeremiah 49:13 ). The ownership of particular cities varied from. time to time in this contested region. Far or near; i.e. towards the frontier or inland. read more

Beth-meon - Meon is probably the Moabite Olympus, and thus Beth-Baal-Meon, the full name of this town Joshua 13:17, would signify the place where the heavenly Baal was worshipped. read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Jeremiah 48:24

Kerioth - A synonym of Ar, the old capital of Moab. It appears to have been a considerable place, and has been identified with El-Korriat, situated on the long ridge of Mount Attarus.Bozrah - Probably the Bosora mentioned in 1 Macc. 5:26 in company with Bosor, i. e., Bezer. Since the word means sheepfolds, it was no doubt a common name for places in this upland region, fit only for pasturage. read more
