Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - 1 Corinthians 6:13

Meats for the belly ... - This has every appearance of being an adage or proverb. Its meaning is plain. “God has made us with appetites for food; and he has made food adapted to such appetites, and it is right, therefore, to indulge in luxurious living.” The word “belly” here κοιλία koilia denotes the “stomach;” and the argument is, that as God had created the natural appetite for food, and had created food, it was right to indulge in eating and drinking to any extent which the appetite... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - 1 Corinthians 6:14

And God hath both raised up ... - This is the “second” argument against indulgences in this sin. It is this. “We are united to Christ. God has raised him from the dead, and made his body glorified. Our bodies will be like his (compare Philippians 3:21); and since our body is to be raised up by the power of God; since it is to be perfectly pure and holy, and since this is to be done by his agency, it is wrong that it should be devoted to purposes of pollution and lust.” It is unworthy:(1) Of our... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - 1 Corinthians 6:15-16

Know ye not ... - This is the third argument against licentiousness. It is, that we as Christians are united to Christ (compare the notes at John 15:1 ff); and that it is abominable to take the members of Christ and subject them to pollution and sin. Christ was pure - wholly pure. We are professedly united to him. We are bound therefore to be pure, as he was. Shall that which is a part, as it were, of the pure and holy Saviour, be prostituted to impure and unholy embraces?God forbid! - See the... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - 1 Corinthians 6:12-14

1 Corinthians 6:12-14. All things That are indifferent in their own nature, and neither commanded nor forbidden; are lawful unto me Or, as some paraphrase the clause, All things which are lawful for you are lawful for me. Since the apostle could not say, in any sense, that absolutely all things were lawful for him, the sentence must be considered as elliptical, and what is wanting to complete it must be supplied, according to the apostle’s manner, from the subsequent verse. But all... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - 1 Corinthians 6:15-18

1 Corinthians 6:15-18. Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ Mystically united to him, as well as your souls, if you are his true disciples, as you profess to be. Shall I then take the members of Christ My body, which is united to him, with its members; and make them the members of a harlot United to her, and used to gratify her sinful inclinations? Know ye not Need I inform you; that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? But he that is joined unto the... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Unlawful sexual freedom (6:12-20)The Corinthians had claimed that since they were not in bondage to laws they could do as they wished. Paul replies that this is not so. Not all things are helpful, and some may lead a person into a new kind of bondage (12).Certain people at Corinth even claimed that just as the stomach needs a constant supply of food to satisfy it, so the body needs unrestrained sexual pleasure for its satisfaction. Paul denies this. The body’s main purpose is not concerned with... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - 1 Corinthians 6:13

Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall bring to naught both it and them. But the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.Meats for the belly ... This was probably another current proverb among the Corinthians with the meaning suggested by Marsh. As one indulges an appetite for food, that being the function of the stomach, so should the physical urge for sexual indulgence be gratified. Paul refutes the argument, stomach and food being... read more
