The Pulpit Commentary - 1 Thessalonians 5:24

Faithful is he that calleth you. Paul knows that he does not beseech God in vain. He who calls you to the Christian faith is faithful to fulfill his promises. God's calling is the commencement of a series which terminates in glorification ( Romans 8:30 ). A similar appeal to the faithfulness of God is elsewhere made by the apostle ( 1 Corinthians 1:9 ; 2 Thessalonians 3:3 ). Who also will do it ; namely, will preserve you blameless unto the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - 1 Thessalonians 5:23

And the very God of peace - The God who gives peace or happiness; compare notes, Romans 1:7.Sanctify you - See the notes at John 17:17.Wholly - ὁλοτελεῖς holoteleis. In every part; completely. It is always proper to pray that God would make his people entirely holy. A prayer for perfect sanctification, however, should not be adduced as a proof that it is in fact attained in the present life.Your whole spirit and soul and body - There is an allusion here, doubtless, to the popular opinion in... read more

Faithful is he that calleth you - That is, your sanctification after all depends on him, and as he has begun a work of grace in your hearts, you may depend on his faithfulness to complete it; see the 1 Thessalonians 4:3 note; Philippians 1:6 note; 1 Corinthians 1:9 note. read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

5:12-28 ADVICE ON OTHER MATTERSMinor difficulties had arisen in the Thessalonian church, and the church leaders had the responsibility to see that these matters were put right. Paul therefore reminds the church members to respect those who have the duty of guiding the church, and not to be offended when the church leaders find it necessary to give corrective instruction (12-13). The leaders, on their part, must always act with patience and understanding (14).All Christians should live in a... read more

And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."Peace" in this verse and "grace" a little later in 1 Thessalonians 5:28 are another variant, along with the instance in Ephesians, of Paul's varying the formula of "grace and peace." Here it is "peace and grace."Sanctify you wholly ... Despite the "setting apart" unto God that takes place in one's conversion (faith, repentance and... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - 1 Thessalonians 5:24

Faithful is he that calleth you, who will also do it.The great achievement must ever remain the work of God. When people do all that they are commanded to do (and whoever did that?), the perfection that must be attained prior to entering eternal life is the attainment of God in Christ, not the achievement of any man. "Unprofitable" is the word that God has written by the name of every servant; and the marvel of ages is that God knows how to save even his unworthy servants! read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - 1 Thessalonians 5:21-23

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22. Prove all things, &c.— Though they were not to despise prophesyings, yet they were not to receive every thing which might be so called; but to prove and examine all things that went under that name. Nor were they to stop here; but when they had separated them, or could distinguish between them, they were to reject the evil and hold fast the good. These two verses and the preceding verse ought to have been joined together, and then the connection would have been more... read more
