Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary - 1 Chronicles 26:20-28

Observe, 1. There were treasures of the house of God. A great house cannot be well kept without stores of all manner of provisions. Much was expended daily upon the altar-flour, wine, oil, salt, fuel, besides the lamps; quantities of these were to be kept beforehand, besides the sacred vestments and utensils. These were the treasures of the house of God. And, because money answers all things, doubtless they had an abundance of it, which was received from the people's offerings, wherewith they... read more

The last mentioned in the lineage from Eliezer, the younger son of Moses: and his brethren ; or kinsmen: were over all the treasures of the dedicated things ; which had been devoted for the service of God, and of the temple particularly: which David the king had dedicated ; out of the spoils he took in war, see 2 Samuel 8:11 , the chief fathers ; princes of tribes, and heads of families: the captains over thousands and hundreds ; in the several... read more

Out of the spoils won in battle did they dedicate to maintain the house of the Lord. When it should be built; for as yet it was not; both to repair it when necessary, and to provide sacrifices for it; or to confirm, strengthen, and animate the heart of the king to build it, so some, and put it into the power of his hands to do it; so the Romans dedicated the best of their spoil, and laid it up in the temple of Jupiter Feretrius, after the example of Romulus, their first king F6 Vid.... read more

Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible - 1 Chronicles 26:27

The spoils won in battles did they dedicate - It seems these were intended for its repairs. This custom prevailed amongst almost all the people of the earth. All who acknowledged any supreme Being, believed that victory could only come through him; and therefore thought it quite rational to give him a share of the spoils. Proofs of this exist in all ancient histories: thus Virgil: - Irruimus ferro, et divos, ipsumque vocamus In partem praedamque Jovem read more

The treasures . The very first use of this word to signify a place where treasures were kept is in Joshua 6:19 , Joshua 6:24 . The same word is used for either the place or the treasures kept in it. Not found in the Books of Samuel, the word often occurs in the two Books of Kings and of Chronicles, once in Ezra, several times in Nehemiah, etc. In our next chapter ( 1 Chronicles 27:25 , 1 Chronicles 27:27 , 1 Chronicles 27:28 ) it appears in the Authorized Version as " ... read more

It is, perhaps, somewhat remarkable that, though the sacred history suggests to us numerous fit occasions for the "dedications" spoken of in this verse, yet they are not described in detail, nor even alluded to at the times when they occurred. Samuel, Saul, Abner, and Joab had then been unwittingly finding some of the treasures now disposed to highest use by David. read more

The foundations of a sacred treasury had therefore been laid as far back as the time of Samuel, when the Israelites began to recover from their last servitude. Such a treasury had been once before established, namely, under Joshua Joshua 6:24; but it appears to have been soon exhausted, and we hear nothing of it under any of the later judges until Samuel. read more
