Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary - 1 Chronicles 9:14-34

We have here a further account of the good posture which the affairs of religion were put into immediately upon the return of the people out of Babylon. They had smarted for their former neglect of ordinances and under the late want of ordinances. Both these considerations made them very zealous and forward in setting up the worship of God among them; so they began their worship of God at the right end. Instances hereof we have here. I. Before the house of the Lord was built they had the house... read more

The corresponding account of these Levites ( Nehemiah 11:15-18 ) has some additional details—as, for instance, that the number of "the Levites in the holy city were two hundred four score and four;" that two "of the chief of the Levites, Shabbethai and Jozabad," not given here, "had the oversight of the outward business of the house of God;" that "Mattaniah… was the principal to begin the thanksgiving in prayer;" and that Bakbukiah (hero called Bakbakkar) was "the second among his brethren."... read more

The porters here are those who had charge of the entrances to the sanctuary. The word employed ( שֹׁעֵר ) is used, however, generally of gate or door keepers. Their number, stated in 1 Chronicles 9:22 as two hundred and twelve, is probably corrected in Nehemiah 11:19 to one hundred and seventy-two, made up of twenty-four for every week ( 1 Chronicles 26:17 , 1 Chronicles 26:18 ), "entering on the sabbath" upon their work ( 2 Kings 11:5 ; 2 Chronicles 23:4 ), in rotation for... read more

Hitherto (so John 5:17 ). The reference must be to Shallum, for see 1 Chronicles 9:24-26 and Ezekiel 46:1-3 . The meaning of the remaining sentence of this verse is, "These were the gate-keepers for the Levite encampments side," or what, in later temple times, answered to it. read more

Who hitherto waited - Translate, “Who to this day waits. These were the porters in the stations of the sons of Levi.” The words of the first clause refer to Shallum, and imply that, whereas Shallum (or his house) had originally the general superintendence of the temple gates, a change had been made when the author wrote, and Shallum’s charge had become the east gate only. The second clause means; “these were the porters in those fixed stations at the outer gates of the Temple, which... read more
