(a) THE PRINCIPAL VESSELS OF THE TEMPLE (2 Chronicles 4:1-10).THE BRAZEN ALTAR (2 Chronicles 4:1).(l) An altar of brass.—The brazen altar, or altar of burnt offering, made by Solomon, is not noticed in the parallel chapters of Kings (1 Kings 6:7) which describe the construction of the temple and its vessels of service, but it is incidentally mentioned in another passage of the older work (1 Kings 9:25), and its existence seems to be implied in 1 Kings 8:22; 1 Kings 8:64. (2) Even if pôthôth be correct in Kings, the chronicler might have understood the word to mean openings, rather than hinges, and so have substituted the common word pethah, which has that sense. The resemblance of the one word to the other would be a further consideration in its favour, according to ancient notions of interpretation. read more

Their adaptation was perfected at a distance, and then they were set in their glorious home. 2. The brass and silver and gold work,... read more

FURNISHINGS OF THE TEMPLE (vv.1-22) Some of the furnishings for the temple were placed on the outside, others inside. The bronze altar (v.1) was of course outside, and much larger than that made for the tabernacle, in fact 20 by 20 cubits, and 10 cubits high, - about 30 feet square and 15 feet high. Bronze (or copper) speaks of the holiness of God, so that the bronze altar emphasises the holy judgment of God borne by His holy Son as the one sacrifice for sin. Thus, we must meet God at the... read more

A comparison with the corresponding place in 1 Kings will show how this account is abbreviated as the matter was not necessary to the author’s purpose. HIS POWER AND... read more

Can anything be more similar, in figure and type, than this molten sea to the fountain opened in gospel-times for sin and for uncleanness?
