Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - 2 Samuel 17:28-29

2 Samuel 17:28-29. Brought beds, and basons, &c.— Dr. Russell tells us, "that burgle is very commonly used among the Christians of Aleppo;" and in a note he informs us, "that this burgle is wheat boiled, then bruised by a mill, so as to take the husk off, then dried and kept for use." The usual way of dressing it, is, either by boiling it like rice into a pilaw, or making it into balls, with meat and spice, and either fried or boiled. These balls are called cubby. Rauwolf and Ockley speak... read more

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible - 2 Samuel 17:27

27-29. when David was come to Mahanaim—The necessities of the king and his followers were hospitably ministered to by three chiefs, whose generous loyalty is recorded with honor in the sacred narrative. Shobi—must have been a brother of Hanun. Disapproving, probably, of that young king's outrage upon the Israelite ambassadors, he had been made governor of Ammon by David on the conquest of that country. Machir—(See :-). Supposed by some to have been a brother of Bath-sheba, and Barzillai—a... read more

John Dummelow's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Samuel 17:1-29

The Fall of AhithophelAbsalom follows the advice of Hushai rather than that of Ahithophel, who thereupon hangs himself. David retreats to Mahanaim.3. The death of David would put an end to all resistance, and bring about peace. 7. At this time] RV ’this time.’ Hushai contrasts this suggestion of Ahithophel with his former advice (2 Samuel 16:21), which was good. 8. A man of war] Ahithophel’s advice, though plausible, was not sound. David was too experienced a warrior to be caught unprepared.16.... read more

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers - 2 Samuel 17:27

(27) Shobi the son of Nahash.—The narrative pauses in its course a moment to speak of the assistance sent to David during the time he was at Mahanaim and while Absalom had been gathering his forces. Among those whose friendly assistance was conspicuous was “Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon.” Hanun, king of the Ammonites, was a son of Nahash, and was conquered by David at Rabbah (2 Samuel 10:1; 2 Samuel 12:29-31). It is very possible that after dismantling the royal... read more

L. M. Grant's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Samuel 17:1-29

Ahithophel discerned clearly that if Absalom was to gain any victory over David he must strike quickly. Satan knows that the only way to establish the anti-christ in power is to destroy the true Christ. So Ahithophel urges that he be allowed to take with him 12,000 men (in contrast to the few hundred who had gone with David) and immediately the same night pursue David. He well reasons that such an attack would scatter David's men and leave David unprotected, so that they could kill him alone.... read more

James Gray's Concise Bible Commentary - 2 Samuel 17:1-29

O, ABSALOM , MY SON , MY SON ! LUST, MURDER AND DECEIT (2 Samuel 13:0 ) In the preceding lesson judgments were foretold as coming on David, and we are entering on that part of his career when the prediction is fulfilled in earnest. The foulness of this chapter we would not dwell upon more than we can help. Tamar of course, while sister to Absalom, was half-sister to Amnon, the two young men being sons of David by different wives. “A garment of divers colours” (2 Samuel 13:18 ) might be... read more
