At Cesarea - See the notes on Acts 8:40.And gone up - From the ship. And saluted the church - The church at Jerusalem. Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Acts 18:19-23

Acts 18:19-23. And he came to Ephesus The ship in which they sailed probably having occasion to touch there. And he entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews Upon whom his discourse made such an impression, that they desired him to tarry longer with them However, as his vow made it necessary that he should offer the appointed sacrifice in Jerusalem at the ensuing feast, which, according to the general opinion, was the passover, he consented not, but bade them farewell ... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Acts 18:18-22

Return to Antioch (18:18-22)Paul then prepared to return home. At Cenchreae, from where the ship sailed, he fulfilled a vow (probably a Nazirite vow; see Numbers 6:1-21) which for some reason he had taken upon himself (18). He sailed across to Ephesus where he stayed a short while. His preaching created much interest and probably resulted in the start of a church in that city. Then, leaving Aquila and Priscilla in Ephesus, he sailed for his home church in Antioch, though he hoped to return to... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Acts 18:22

And when he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and saluted the church, and went down to Antioch.Went up and saluted the church ... refers to a visit to Jerusalem, this being the fourth trip to that city since Paul's conversion. He went down to Antioch ... This was the Syrian Antioch, the "sponsoring church" as some would say today, which had sent Paul on his missionary travels. The statement in the next verse that he "spent some time there" indicates that he gave a full report of all that the... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Acts 18:19-22

Acts 18:19-22. And he came to Ephesus,— For the short time that the apostle now continued at Ephesus, which seems to have been but one sabbath-day, he went into the synagogue, and discoursed with the Jews, and with such Gentiles as usually attended the synagogue service, concerning the Christian doctrine; but when they desired him to stay longer with them, he refused, and took his leave of them, telling them, Act 18:21 that he must by all means go up to Jerusalem, upon the account of his being... read more

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible - Acts 18:22

22. And when he had landed at Cæsarea—where he left the vessel. and gone up—that is, to Jerusalem. and saluted the church—In these few words does the historian despatch the apostle's FOURTH VISIT TO JERUSALEM after his conversion. The expression "going up" is invariably used of a journey to the metropolis; and thence he naturally "went down to Antioch." Perhaps the vessel reached too late for the feast, as he seems to have done nothing in Jerusalem beyond "saluting the Church," and privately... read more

4. The beginning of ministry in Asia 18:18-22Paul had attempted to reach the province of Asia earlier (Acts 16:6). Now the Lord permitted him to go there but from the west rather than from the east. Luke recorded his initial contact in Ephesus in this section to set the scene for his ministry there when he returned from Syrian Antioch (ch. 19). read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Acts 18:22

Paul’s ship landed at Caesarea, the chief port of Jerusalem (cf. Acts 10:1). He went from there "up" to Jerusalem and greeted the church. To "go up to" and "go down from" are almost technical terms for going to and from Jerusalem in Acts. [Note: Longenecker, p. 489; Neil, p. 199.] Likewise "the church," without a modifier, is clearly a reference to the mother church in Jerusalem here. [Note: Bruce, "The Church . . .," p. 641.] When Paul had finished his business in Jerusalem, he returned to... read more
